Landlord wants PPS

    Hey all,
I've just moved back to Ireland and am renting for the first time. I went to look at some places today in Limerick and one landlord was looking for a copy of a photo-ID and the PPS number for me and my wife as well as a reference letter from my work.
Now while I can understand the letter and possibly the ID thing I am really edgy about handing out our PPS numbers as well (he also has my family's home address). Is it normal for landlords to ask for PPS numbers? Maybe I'm a bit paranoid but the thought of giving so much personal information to a stranger is a bit daunting.

Maybe he is going to register you with the PRTB?

    The what?

edit: you mean this http://www.prtb.ie/ ?

edit 2: ah, I looked at the "registering a tenant" form. That's probably what he wants it for, it is a really nice, expensive looking, place. I guess they want to keep it that way :D

Also, you need his PPS number for http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/revguide/renttaxcredit.htm

Its worth a few hundred a year, assuming you are paying income tax.
