Boston to Washington

    Hi all,

I am heading off to the states on the 14th of August. A friend and I are going over, we are landing in Boston and are planning on travel down the east coast and flying home from Washington on the 1st of September, so roughly 19 days! It will be a bit of a sight seeing/party holiday :D

    We are planning on hitting
    1. Boston - 4-5 Days
    2. New York - 4 Days
    3. Philadelphia- 3 Days
    4. Baltimore - 3 Days
    5. Washington - 3 Days

With the possibility of heading over to Atlantic city for a day or two. The possibility also exits to go to providence instead of going to Atlantic city at a later date.

So basically I was wondering if anybody has done anything like this or has an advice on travelling between these cities? We don't really know much about Baltimore or Washington so any information of must see stuff would be great.

Has anyone got any good hostels they could recommend also?

I bought a copy of the lonely planet for the USA it's good but doesn’t give all that much detail.

    Any happy much appreciated!!!!!

skip baltimore altogether to be honest, its one of the most dangerous cities in the states and there ain't much to see.

in washington the main sites would include things like lincoln memorial including all the close by memorials like korea, WW2, vietnam; jefferson memorial (you can also hire paddle boats out on the lake next to the JM), white house, capitol building, washington monument book tickets online BEFORE you leave ireland otherwise expect a long queue http://www.recreation.gov/tourParkDetail.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=77811 and the Smithsonian Institution which is an area of 19 museums and research centres

one day is plenty is Atlantic city if you go, the only thing it has in common with las vegas is that gambling is legal, while vegas is full of life and energy and bars and clubs, AC is most certainly not :D

i would recommend a day trip to upstate new york maybe check out the catskill mountains or even a trip to niagara falls and then onto toronto which has quite a few sites

i use http://www.hostelworld.com for hostels and http://www.tripadvisor.com for reviews

for new york i would recommend you stay in http://starhotelny.com/index.php boston try the ymca for $35 per night you can get a twin room which is $4 dollars cheaper than the hi hostel in a dorm
drop balitmore and put more time in nyc also washington 3 days is too much

On the train line between Boston and Washington you can stop at Delaware!

Washington can be done in literally a day. Tiny city, with all the main landmarks in the same area (Washington Mall) and then use the excellent underground metro to get to Arlington Cemetry (which is a must see) and the Pentagon. Spend more time in New York, it's the best, go to the beach, the weather will be lovely.

From Philly you could do a day trip to the Amish country. You could find a bus trip, or rent a car for the day if you are willing to drive in the States. It is a little over an hour's drive. Make sure you do NOT go on Sunday, as the Amish are strict about not working Sundays, and the coolest part is seeing them plough fields etc. with a few horses and these medieval wooden contraptions.

Also near Philly is a town called New Hope, Pennsylvania, which is very cool for an off-the-beaten-path day trip. Renting a car for the day would be your best bet to get there - though it would make a fairly good stopping point between NYC and Philly. Half a day there would probably be enough.

Atlantic City has been cleaned up a lot recently, as nearby states have legalised gambling, but it is still nowhere in the league of Las Vegas. From Philly, just ask at your hotel or hostel about where to grab the nearest bus to AC for the day. The casinos subsidise the buses, so you should be able to get there for half-nothing. Trains from Philly to AC are also quite cheap, check out www.njtransit.com for schedules.

I did a road trip around new England last year. I reckon 4-5 days in Boston would too much. We did Boston in a day and saw loads of stuff. Id go visit Niagara falls and Toronto / CN tower also, if you's have a car. Theres other good stuff enroute. 19 days should be enough to fit this in also. We did Whale watching in the Atlantic ocean near Boston. It was pretty amazing stuff. We got to see them dive out of the water. Class. Id suss this out also.
