No life after selfemployment ?

I just found out today I am not entitled to jobseekers allowance. I was selfemployed for the last 3 years but havent worked in 2 months and lived on the remaining profits which are now gone ( I only went to the dole last week ). In my highest earning year I earned 50k after tax but each following year was less and less as things tightened up. I was told today by the social that if I was working as a paye and earned 100k, won the lotto the night before I could sign on no problem as I was a normal worker. This sounds a little unfair to me. Before I was selfemployed I worked for years as a normal worker in the same industry. This policy seems to encourage people not to ty and better themselves. I have a wife and three kids, can anyone give advice please as what to do as I am a little pissed off at the moment with the whole setup. Thanks in advance.
ps. I am up to date with my tax affairs.

theres only one out mate....u either work for the state (kinda - u pay them taxes) or u work for yourself...so u gotta de-register as self employed if u wanna sign on again....harsh yes but thats the way it is...and ur exactly right on what u say....the government hates u...they never wanted u :D

I have de-registered as self employed, last week, and I also have paid them quite a bit of tax over the last few years:confused:

Once you have de-registered, you can apply for Jobseekers Allownace. This payment is means tested i.e if you have any money in your bank a/c or your partner is working oyu might not get the full amount.
