    Hi all,

I've been looking for a DSLR recently and looked at different options from the Sony Alpha 200 to the Canon EOS range. I have just found in ebay a package with the following...

    Canon EOS 400D
    Canon EF-S 18-55 lens
    Canon EF 75-300 lens
    4 GB Compact Flash card
    USB Compact Flash reader
    All weather carry bag

All for approx € 730 including delivery

OR, should I go for the newer 450D for € 658 from Komplett.ie which only comes with the 18-55 lens.

Im new to the SLR world so any feedback would be great. And to all those who have already answered earlie threads, thanks to them and I promise, I'll make a decision soon... :D

Looks like a decent deal but you may soon grow out of those lenses.
All I can say is buyer beware when shopping on ebay!!!

    Get a 40d, TRUST ME!!!!

I was in your position only two months ago, beginner photographer hmmm, my first SLR a shiny 400d wow this camera is the shizniz it's gonna last me forever it's great!

Two months later (right about now) I sell my 400d and I get a 40d. Because the second you try and do something that the 400d can't do, you begin to crave for a better camera. I was thinking "If only it could do this that the other..."

Don't get me wrong, the 400d is a great camera, served me well for two months but you will notice its limits soon after.

    40d costs a tad more though :-/

Can you post a link to the 400d on ebay?

As someone said you'll grow out of those lenses, 450D from Komplett I'd go for.
3" screen is far superior on it amongst other things.
When I bought my 24-105L in Conn's yesterday I had a feel of the 40D and it's just so much bigger then the 450D I hated it!

GREAT, thanks Ninja_Scrotum, you just go ahead and confuse liddle ole me even more!! LOL

Seriously though, I'd love to go that one step further to the 40D but that would spell immediate divorce (at best)!! Did you find your 400D to be a good entry level camera? TBH, I cant imagine myself having the time to get that far into photography so the entry level should do me for a while at least.

    Here's the link....

I got the 450D. I've seen it referred to in articles and reviews as a '40D Lite'. I've never looked back. Check your PMs.:)

Personally I would consider 97.7% feedback to be low.
I usually take the decimal after the 99% as the rating cos I'm a paranoid type.

    Sorry aido :-D

The 400d is a fecking great entry level camera, you wont be disappointed! Just type 400d into the search bar on flickr.com to see the great photos that can be taken with it.

But beware, when I got the 400d I was shocked and appalled to find that you can't use the lcd screen to see the shot you are taking, you have to peek through the little viewfinder, but you get used to it. (The 450d does allow you to use the lcd creen in this way though....)

And also, I was shocked to find that it didn't record video, I was like "what the ****!!! my ***ing 80euro argos camera can record video and this thing can't????!!!"

    Good feckin camera though.

Hey check out this 450d deal on ebay. The whole lot would be about 730 including delivery. His feedback is pretty good, seems to have a lot of happy customers recently. Although he's from taiwan:eek:

Didn't stop me getting a 40d from him though:pac: 'tis on it's way.

Dont forget tax on top of that though! that adds roughly 24/25%

Live view has only been around on SLRs really since the current 1D MkIII 40D generation. There nothing appaling about not having it.

This guy declares low value just like many other good ebay stores COUGH*KEA*COUGH

He emailed me and told me the exact amount he's going to declare, which if taxed at 25% will be feck all. Nobody can declare zero value because that illegal according to him! He's half legit anyways.

Yes it is appalling when you have live view on a 50euro piece of shit from argos and you go and spend up to a few thousand on some cameras with no live view. I understand the mechanics of it now though, but still, I was raging! Even me feckin' phone has live view!

I just bought a 450D kit with 4gig hdsd card for €638 inc delivery, best deal I could find on the web! got it from 7dayshop.com

    hope that helps

    freddie

I'm not a great fan of these kits
They are like cheap food they just cram in pointless stuff to make it look better and more interesting
I think you'll be better off considering what you need it for.
You can get a 400D in Dublin buy it now and posted for €410 body only
That leaves you €320 for glass, you might not ever use the telephoto or you might want something with a better dof.So i think you should think about what you are going to shoot then ask on here about the best lense.Find a 400D body only then buy the glass you need

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Canon-EOS-400D-body-only-BRAND-NEW-IN-DUBLIN_W0QQitemZ330245195592QQihZ014QQcategoryZ31388QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
    Thats the 400D on ebay

What exactly can the 400D not do that the 40D can ??

all i can think of is faster frame per second rate ..

    Live view.

Seems like there's less risk going for the 7dayshop offer. Do you really need the other lenses??? Is your budget really tight?

You know the feeling, the moment you try your new PC and the first site you come across has the next generation processor at half the price.

If you own it, it is already obsolete.

Most of my cameras are 40 years old or more, but my 400D is great fun.

Unless you need the extra fps for sports or live view for accurate macro focusing the 400D is a damn good camera.

Personally I'm considering upgrading to a 40D sometime but I'll be keeping my 350D.

Handles signal to noise much better. Feels more substantial in your hand. The controls are more intuitive. Measures light much more accurately. Has a faster processor. DOF setting actually works.

Higher iso, live view, less noise, faster fps, spot metering, that highlight tone priority thing which reduces burnt out highlights, those 3 custom modes... can't think of any more at the moment. And I don't even have the camera yet! So imagine what else I'll discover when it arrives.

Very like the 450D - apart from the 6 fps.:)

    6.5fps :p

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 510 ✭✭✭Ninja_scrotum

The 450d has all of those minus 6fps?

I read somewhere that since an extra 2million pixels are packed onto the same size sensor as the 400d there would be more noise. That true?

    Go to - www.canon.ie
    Click on Products
    Click Digital SLR
Click the check box on 450D and the 40D then click Compare.

Now you can see all the differences, side by side.

    Simple as that.
