This is slightly embarrasing, i'm working in a golf shop, have been for about six months or so but i don't have a handicap, i'm looking for somewhere thats cheap to get a GUI card. I play off 11 in a society but I need to get a "real" one pretty sharpish, i'm sick of customers coming in and asking where i play and what do i play off and not been able to say anything.

Like most of us, i just can't afford to be paying thousands to join a club, so any suggestions for cheap memberships will be welcomed.

You could do what most of the lads in these golf shops do and lie... Or depending on where you are from the likes of city west do good deals

I'm based in south dublin. Travelling somewhere far wouldn't be a problem though

Welcome to my world!lol! I've been priceing up a few courses over the last week and have been pretty unsuccessful thus far. Golf in Ireland and Dublin in particular is greedy business. I when down to a club was told a price of the membership (by a staff member) which I was happy with and willing to pay until I came back spoke with the course director and he told me it was another price. So the next day I rang up again, put on a different voice and again received the first cheaper rate. I wasn't happy to say the least, he was simply trying to take me for all i was worth.....

If you just want a handicap you can join Foyle GC in Derry as a country member for c.€175. That includes a GUI card (£120 + £20 for GUI card).

€300 for distance menbership in Longford Golf Club, i'd highly reccomend it at that price only an hour from Dublin.

I've just joined Portlaoise GC as a distance member, only €180. It's only 45 mins from the red cow and it's actually not that bad. Keep in mind i beleive the GUI are bringing in a new rule where you will have to play your chosen 'country' course at least 4 times in the season.

Slievenamon is not €200..its €255 now..and its a terrible, short course and your handicap will be false there..You could be off 14/15 there but really you should be off 18

If your looking for cheap membership then highfield golf club in Carbury, Kildare might be an option! I was there today at the driving range and picked up a leaflet on their prices.

5 day golf membership gives full access all day Monday-Friday, also Sat & Sun before 8am and after 1pm. GUI handicap and run comps every wed. The only thing is you cant enter weekend comps. The entrance fee is 200euro then an annual fee of 470euro up front or 45euro per month. I think its a brilliant deal seeing as its 40euro per round.

Their country memebership says you have to be a full memeber of another GUI affiliated club, so I reckon thats not an option for his forum!?

Its a great course. Its not too far from dublin. Only 40mins from lucan. Thier website has some info but they dont promote all their offers. (gym and golf membership together is reasonable too)

    Hope this helps;)

Rubbish my friend, i joined it on saturday, played 3 rounds, two saturday, on sunday. averaged 20 handicap, they gave me 17 just to protect themselves (all set up on golfnet and playing my first open at the heath on sunday).

Cost me 180 euros (it says it clearly on their website), they couldnt have been nicer, and they even told me if i stop by for a round i can bring out a free green fee.

It is a short course but in no way easy, fast and difficult greens, and needs a lot of thought to go round. think stepaside, only a harder with better greens. it reads short on the card, yet i hit 280+ off the tee and was never in a position to drive a green, hazards perfectly placed.

Perfect solution if you want to play proper golf very cheaply, i reckon go for it if at all possible.
