Ask the dude that you got the lappy off. The only way to reset the password is to boot from the OS CD. Seeing as you don't have them, I'm not sure what you can do....

If your account is an administrator account, just use your login password. There's no root access as such, just sudo access

Which is of no use if there is a single, auto-loading user account unfortunately. OP, back to the point of purchase for assistance, or buy a copy of OS X for the disk.

thanks for the reply, but the company i bough it from cant help, though i read that you can only change the admin and password from the OS CD,,when installing now i wonder can i upgrade to leopard or will the original not let me install,oh well

Nah if you want to upgrade, throw in the leopard disk and hold down the c button to boot off the disk, you should be able to change the password from that point, otherwise you should be able to do any manner of install from clean to upgrade...

that's if the computer can take it, and if you bought it in the last 4/5 years it should be well able to run it.
