i want to put in a new hard drive. i know how to do it and all but there's one thing i'm not sure about and that's the drive backup.

what exactly can you backup using the backup utility? is it just game saves or does it backup the installs games have like GTA and MGS4 installs. as it would be a pain in the ass having to reinstall them again.

It backs up save games, downloaded games and video's. It doesn't backup install data unfortunately,so you will have to install and update your games again.

    ohh another question about this.

i have one of them virtual ps2 memory cards set up you know the ones that act like a 8mb ps2 memory card but the info is stored on the hard drive?

are they copied across in the back up? because if you actually go to the memory card under the games menu in XMB it doesn't have an option to copy it when you hit triangle.

Not sure myself, but I think it does back them up.

Be careful. I swapped my stock 40GB for a 320GB and the backup failed to restore every time. So make sure you have your game saves copied to USB stick or similar.

Took about 24 hours to fully format too. Nasty encryption :(

Took 3.5 hours to format my 40gb model. I also swapped mine for a western digital 320gb hdd and had no trouble whatsoever.
