I have used the Lightforce 170 for lamping foxes but wanted to know if anyone has tried the new LED type torches for lamping.
Are they effective at throwing a beam of light that is useable for lamping or only a gimic?

I don't think LEDS are quite the thing for lamping just yet.
I have used the 1w type which are about as bright as you get and while they are very good as far as LEDs go they are not really as good as a halogen type lamp.
I like the head torches for general usage and for close range but for anything over 30m you really need a proper lamp.
I will be getting a lightforce soon myself, just to decide which one...

I have used my sons Lightforce 170 variable power scope mounted lamp on his 223. Very good, big output and variable brightness, and it's like daylight. Being scope mounted the beam follows where ever your looking when you look through the scope at your target.
A good product I just changed the connections so that I can quickly change battery's. I used the remote control car battery connections, got from All Models, Cable St, Dublin.

Been there, done that, ordered the Lightforce!!! The LED is dead handy to have in your pocket when lamping but is not effective as a beam to shoot with.

Seen on another forum that Cluson have a HID lamp out -
    Vermin Blaster

Would have to see it in use first though - 2 reservations I'd have about this
    - it's not recommended to turn HID bulbs on/off a lot - as in flashing it down the field to keep an eye on a fox when calling it.
    - any HID bulbs I have take a second or 2 to reach full power.
