I was just saying something sarcastic to someone there and I was wondering which is the proper phrase: your majesty or you're majesty. I would assume it's your, as in the royal 'we' but not sure

Well it would surely be "your". "You're" would be "You are majesty". Majesty is not an adjective like majestic.

You could say "You're majestic" but that would not be within Royal protocol and the Queen would have a big Beefeater come and beat you up with a cudgel.

The OP didn't say which country. Doesn't have to be the Queen of England

    You're = You 'are = phail

    'Yore' for extra sarcasm.

I know what the differences between the two words (your / you're) *mutters* unlike a lot of boardsies. I was just wondering which is the proper one to use, as neither make any sense

Pretty sure it's 'your'. Don't know why but I'd assume it is because 'His/Her majesty' seems to be used too.

You are quite right, it doesn't have to be. Is there any reason why it shouldn't be though?

If you are talking about Queen Elisabeth II of England then these are the rules that apply:-

The Queen is called Your Majesty initially and Ma'am (rhymes with jam) as the conversation continues.
The Duke of Edinburgh is called Your Royal Highness initially and Sir as the conversation continues.
Other members of the Royal Family are called Your Royal Highness initially and Sir/Ma'am as the conversation continues.

Otherwise id recommend you don’t address the buggers at all! :D

No, it's 'Google is your friend' ..

Since this thread is pedantic anyway:)

I don't intend to address anyone in the Royal Family. I was just saying "something sarcastic, your majesty!" to someone in work and wondered which was the proper word to use

Ah it does. Your is used here as: belonging to the people.

So on the arrival she would be introduced to the people as their queen. So the your = you+plural+ownership.

    ah ok. Thanks Abi.

I should probably know this..... I think it's "your." I can't see how it'd be you are majesty!

You could be implying that they are the definition of majesty. In the same way hip youngsters of today might exclaim, "That Snoop Dog fellow is the shìt!"

it makes it sound like you are justifying why you are obeying:

Queen: "can you please do x"

    commoner: "yes, you are majesty"

    EDIT: SNAP!

Shouldn't it be "your majesties" in accordance with their penchant for using plural pronouns for themselves?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,698 ✭✭✭Dinter

    It's "your".

You are addressing their "Majesty" not as a title (like Mrs Majesty) but as something that is integral and inseperable from their own self.

It's like calling someone overweight, your obeseness. It's apparent who you're talking to by virtue of what they are.

It's all that "privilege of birth" and "ordained by god" crap.

That's why the mad bitch refers to herself in the plural.

She's talking about herself, Elizabeth, and the office and lineage of Royalty.
