11/12 Days in US - NYC (for 6/7) and Where Else?

Flying over to New York in October and hoping to spend 6/7 days or so there, with the intention of flying out from there as there will probably be a lot more luggage than we came with..

Now where else is good to visit that's relatively near? We've got about 11-12 days in total so I was thinking maybe 2 days in Washington and 2 in Boston but they're on opposite sides of NYC so I'm not sure how I'd work in the travel plans.

Anyone any suggestions for how to accomplish it or for better places to go? Neither of us drive btw, so we'll be limited to public transport of some form or another.

Well if you stay south of NY, both Philly and Waskington are on Amtrak's Acela Express line. Think its only 2-3 hours from NY to Washington. I've done the NY to Boston trip a few times. Takes about 3:30 on the express service and about 4:15 on the slower one.

Amtak trains leave from Penn Station. Dear, but very comfortable.

An hour and a half to Philadelphia and nearly 3 and a half to Washington. Washington DC can be done in a day. Great subway there.

Is Philadelphia worth seeing? Never really heard anyone mention it.

Boston is an amazing city, and no sales tax on any clothes (New York is only tax free up to a certain amount I think!). For something a bit different you could head to Atlantic City in New Jersey - the Vegas of the East Coast, not sure about public transport though, try Greyhound, Peter Pan for buses and Amtrak for trains. You can get good discount codes for Amtrak by just googling for them!

this maybe further than you want to travel but how about toronto/niagara falls. We did this, was a great city & flights etc worked out reasonable. Flight time about 2 hrs.
As for washington or boston, internal flights are very reasonable so im sure you could get good deals.

We didn't stop there, nothing really comes to mind about that place. I would recommend Washington DC, very nice city and lots to see in a small space.
