VOIP / Nokia Mobile / SIP Client

My mobile is a Nokia 6120c on the Three network.

I have a VOIP account with freespeech.ie with an 076 number.

Using Fring as my SIP client, I can receive calls to the 076 number and make SIP calls on my mobile.

My only problem is that leaving the Fring application running in the background absolutely eats the battery. I'm talking fully charged to flat in about 8 hours, and that's without making or receiving any calls.

I'm not sure if it's the application itself (unlikely) or the fact that it presumably has to keep an internet connection open in order to stay logged in to freespeech.ie (more likely).

Has anybody done something similar? Is there a way to prolong the battery life? Is there a piece of software other than Fring that uses less power?

I wouldn't say its the application running as such, i would say its keeping the GPRS connection open so it can poll the SIP server periodically...

That's pretty much what I figured.

Does anybody have a solution - some way of keeping the connection open without killing the battery, or is there another phone that lasts a bit longer?

No i can't think of a solution... I presume your mobile is like my E51 so you can choose the the sip client is not always registered, hence you will not be able to receive calls on your 076 number, but it will register when you want to make a call over the internet.

On another note, how do you find the call quality? I'm with Vodafone, but think i'm using the wrong internet access point, so my call quality isn't great...

Apparently McDonalds Restaurants have free Wifi in selected restaurants

Thecloud provide wireless broadband hotspots in the UK
where are there decent wifi hotspots in Dublin?
    has Dublin Bus got any?

Why can't I use a cheap WiFi handset from Ebay.co.uk?

I have heard Mobile Phone Networks in Ireland block VOIP telephony due to loss off revenue is this true?

I was told get an Unlimited Data Allowance for my handset, 085 Meteor do 250 MB per month for €10.00 Euros provided your in contract Pay As Go is 99 cents per day is this the best deal?

I am new to this and want to make the right decision I do not want to fall for a marketing gimmick:)

    Thanks,
