Sorry if this has been touched of but I thought it was unique.

I'm less than 6 months in my place and abt to hand in my notice.

I see in my contract it says the company can give me a weeks notice anytime up until 6 months.
It doesn't mention how long I've to give.

Any idea what the law is?

    Thanks
    M

You are required by law to give one week's notice if you've been working there more than 13 weeks. Less than 13 weeks, and you can literally just walk off the job.

    Thanks Seamus

Im 16 weeks here so I guess it'll be at least 1 weeks notice.

What would peoples thoughts be as to giving more notice than I have to?
    Maybe 2 - 3 weeks?

    Thanks for the input.

Depends on whether you're doing an important job or not tbh :)

If they don't have someone else at the moment who can do your job, then giving extra notice can be seen as a sign of good faith to give them time to find a replacement. This can stand well to you if you need a reference.

On the other hand, if there are plenty of people doing your job (e.g. a call centre) and they're not starved for staff, then giving extra notice has no benefit except money in your pocket. They may refuse extra notice in this case.
