Poem for all mothers

For many a year I've studied the earth
For virtues to follow, to honour my birth.
I've learned what is worthless and an empty soul makes.
I've learned to be kind, whatever it takes.
Along the way I must concede
I succumbed to wants, and not to needs.
But all is well as hindsight prevails,
An inner voice that never fails.
You taught me love and respect,
    The backbone of the soul.
You taught me patience and forgiveness,
    To make me whole
You taught me that which is priceless,
All I ever needed to know.
So thank you mother for lighting the way,
    What more can I say,
    Happy Birthday!

    your son

I wrote this poem for my mother on her birthday and published it in the local newspaper. It is a tribute to my mother and to all mothers who love their sons and its a tribute to all sons who love their mothers, but may not say it. Its also a tribute to Gordon Elliott who was taken before his time and who inspired me to outwardly appreciate the bond we share with family and friends. R.I.P.
