(1st of all, i'm quite the amateur, so you'll have to speak slowly and clearly into the clown. ie. me)

i've got a canon 350d (i'm quite fond of it) but today i discovered that the ol' 18-55mm lens that came with it isn't the zoomiest lens in the world. anyone reccomend a decent one that won't break the bank? (OR, does anybody want to give me a good zoom lens for free? no? couldn't hurt to ask...)
what i was trying to do today was the old 'bug on a flower' classic, but there's onlt so close i could get while staying in focus. i'm not trying to read a guys nametag from 50feet down the road or anything :)

perhaps a 100mm f2.8 macro? i've seen some impressive results taken with that lens on here, but dont have one myself. It's definitely one to consider. What kind of budget are we talking about here?

Being a Nikon user myself I wouldn't be the best person to give advice... however I do hear that Canon has a 55-250mm IS lens that might be what you're looking for - very cheap and a natural compliment to your 18-55 lens.

It doesn't really do macro though (bug on leaf sort of things). You might be able to get butterfly on leaf though ;)

my budget? well, i'm not exactly employed at the mo, but i've squirreled away enough to maybe get away with 300 quid or thereabouts? or am i just being terribly naive?

The sigma 70-300 has a macro option on it, not the greatest lens in the world but at €120 it wont break the bank and works very well.
