Strange things that give you comfort.

I'm just after making a cup of tea and a couple of rolls to have with it and I'm after thinking how I'd love if Columbo was on the TV. Something about sitting down in front of the TV and watching Columbo that is bizzarely comforting, and that got me thinking, does anyone else have any odd comforts? Watching Derren Brown also has a strange effect on me but its not the same, its more like the feeling you get with a massage or hair cut. Perhaps he is slowly brainwashing the public through subliminal messaging. More power to him I say.
This thread isn't for regular "I like a good sit down..." type stuff. More for the unusual. Am I alone in my psychological fetishes?

Shouldn't you be out saving the world, rather than browsing Boards?

When my room is clean, like spotless clean! And when people text me, that's a strange one though =P

Don't post anymore or you'll ruin it!

I feel a strange sense of comfort upon writing down a complex number with a positive real part and negative imaginary part.

And yes old movies make me feel young and safe again, columbo included, possibly cos its always on in my parents and i can lie on the couch watching it. Something i dont get to do at home with 2 kids.

Swiss Roll & custard ... most comforting thing there is. Any flavour Swiss Roll.

Builders tea is also very comforting, when you need less comforting, or are in a rush.

    SRSLY

Strange that, love it myself. With a nice cup of tea and something decent and mindless on the box.

    Bliss ;)

Lying in bed listening to the shipping forecast , especially in winter and/or during bad weather, really comforts me....probably a childhood thing.

That does it for me too. All the household chores done, and some nice coffee, soft music, maybe even some strawberries, and a decent book. It's even better if the weather is bad outside and there's a big fire going...

I don't think I'm going out on a limb when I say the clean house thing seems to be a purely girl thing?
I'll add lying kicking back at night in the dark and especially if the weather is rough and listening to Waterloo Sunset or some such song. It has a wonderfully manic effect. A little bit like Wetrz one I guess but more deranged sounding. :pac: Wertz, that name Discworld related at all?

Mine is similar; my bedroom is over the kitchen and I like the sound of the dishwasher going as I drift off to sleep.

Nothin' really ... I just thought I'd spotted a pattern.

thread starts, people post, along comes FB with a bowel related post, and often hilarious it must be said, thread dies.

Then of course, this thread resurrected, blowing my theory out of the toilet water ;)

Playing Final Fantasy 6, 7 or 8, even though I know them all off by heart, find the gameplay boring, and don't even admire the storyline or characterisation as much as I used to when I was young. Just something nostalgic about the atmosphere of them that makes me feel everything's gonna be ok.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,966 ✭✭✭✭syklops

OP, mine is something similar. Cup of Tea and Dinnerladies. I don't know what it is about the show but I think it is hilarious. Even though there were only about 12 episodes and I could probably recite each one, nothing cheers me up better.

Other things that cheer me up are fixing a difficult problem(computer/mechanical related), finishing a bit of code that works, or the first pint of the day. But the only think that is guaranteed to work, is a decent cup of tea, and Dinnerladies.

Cup of tea or glass of whiskey and a few episodes of The Wire.

Don't know what I'll do when I get through the whole 5 series.

this one is strange, but when I'm in bed and can't sleep one thing that puts me out better then anything else is rubbing the top of my foot off my cold calf muscles. I have no idea why, but it's just the biz
