SMTP from your mobile when on WIFI

    Hi,

I have an iPhone, but I imagine this is equally applicable to the owners of N95s and other HOOOOGE devices :)

Generally, while you use your email providers POP3/IMAP servers to read mail, you use your ISPs (if different) SMTP server for sending mail. Otherwise your sent mail gets rejected as you are not on their network.

This is fine, and for example, when on O2 cellular data, you use O2s SMTP server regardless of where your email account is.

What do you do when you are on WIFI?

The 'ISP' varies depending on which premise you are in, and heaven forbid you ask a waitress in a cafe about SMTP servers.

Do you have a domain hosted somewhere? Most hosts will provide you SMTP facility (maybe subject to login, etc.), if you have access to such a thing.

If you have a gmail account (which isn't difficult to get) you can use their smtp server with authentication from any network (unless the network/ISP blocks).

    smtp.gmail.com - TLS (port 465).

I too use the google setup without fail on 3 accounts... 2 are my own domain which work fine on wifi but not on edge the other is my gmail... just changed the outgoing smtp to be like ozymandius mentioned.

I have a domain, but not email with it (they are a bit of a rip for that - 15 MB inbox FFS).

Use POP3 webmail which gets round the problem but is awfully inefficient.

Don't use GMail. Their motto is 'Don't be evil'. People don't get that - it means 'Don't be evil - we know what you search, surf, buy and email and we will remember it forever'.

I would have thought there was a more general solution.

The "general solution" is to use a corporate or paid-for SMTP service. If you don't want to use a free service like GMail because they are evil, and don't want to pay for an SMTP service, then it looks like you'll just have to put up with a bit of inconvenience±
