Lift share

I have been lift sharing with three other people for a while to get to work. Three of us have cars and we drive 1 week in 3, the fourth guy who doesn't have a car pays €22 per wk for a 130km round trip daily (€4.40) to whoever is the driver that week. I don't know how that figure came about, it was just carried on from an existing arrangement with somebody else. Anyhow, I was just costing out my car costs the other day and was thinking of suggesting of putting the price up. Realistically, what do you reckon is fair price for this commute? I was thinking €40

How much would it cost you if you didn't share the lift?

The three of us who drive (myself included) spend about $80 per week on diesel for the week we drive so the guy who never drives is roughly paying 1/4 of the diesel cost. However, there is negligible contibution in this to other costs like servicing and maintenance, tyres, insurance tax, depreciation on car, NCT and the like. There is also the sheer hassle in driving as well 1 week in 3

    so he's saving €60 ish a week....€40 sounds reasonable...half price I reckon...

With or without this guy you would still be paying these costs so to take them into account is idiotic.

Going on that logic I wouldn't be asking him for any contributions to diesel either?

Why is it unreasonable to ask someone to contribute towards the cost of running a car if they are benefitting from it? It would cost him about €90 per week and take approx another hour per day if he were to use public transport

You seem to have it all worked out in your head already so why bother asking for opinions?

One would wonder how your insurance would pay out to your paying passenger should an accident happen.
