Sorry I couldn't think of a more original thread title...:o

I've been working my way through the Films of the Week, and there are some amazing films in there, and a lot of them have led me onto other stuff too.

I'd love some recommendations based on what I've recently enjoyed:
    All the Wes Anderson movies
    The Lives of Others
    The Pianist
    Half Nelson
    City of God
    to name a few

If anyone has any recommendations for films in similar veins, help me! :pac:

    Thanks for the recommendations!
I've seen Leon, Groundhog Day, Kingpin, 12 Angry Men, Glengarry Glen Ross, 25th Hour, Garden State and Amelie, so I started this bunch off with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which I really enjoyed. Very funny but dark too, and the narration reminded me of High Fidelity at times (a movie I love). Plus there's nothin like a little murder mystery. In fact, I'll add that as another genre.
So, murder mysteries, gritty urban dramas, wartime character pieces (if that's a fair description of The Pianist), quirky comedy dramas, and however one would describe The Lives of Others...

Looking forward to watching the rest:
    Rescue Dawn
    Hellboy
    Elf
    The Grinch
    The Man Of The Year
    Tell No One
    Downfall
    A Very Long Engagement
    Lantana
    Mysterious Skin
    London to Brighton

    For gritty urban dramas:

Harsh Times: A similar mood to Training Day, it stars Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead: Perhaps better described as a gritty sub-urban drama, it tells the tale of two brothers who plan a heist on their own parents' jewellery store.

Straight Time: It's an oldie, but a goodie. It stars Dustin Hoffman as a recently paroled felon, who tries to make it straight but struggles to keep away from his former life.

Serpico: Another oldie, and another Sidney Lumet film, but it's terrific. The true story of an honest New York cop fighting against rampant corruption. Al Pachino's finest work, for my money.

    Can I throw in

Oldboy as a dark mystery thriller.
Grandmas Boy underated stoner movie, with some great quotes, definately funnier than The Grinch and Elf (both relatively poor imo)

Even tho there is two Christmas movies already you should check out "Bad Santa" ,Billy Bob is great in it and very funny,Id also recommend "The Big White" its dark and funny so you should like it.

Check out "Dogma" I think it one of Kevin Smiths best if you like that then check out "Clerks" "Mallrats","Chasing Amy" theres allot of different movies there hope you like them!

Glad you liked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, it really is a great film.

If you like a good mystery, Tell No One should be right up your alley, but I'd add the excellent Korean serial killer drama Memories of Murder to that, which I really recommend. You should also enjoy Narc as far as gritty urban dramas go, and you should definitely try The Boondock Saints, which is certainly a very offbeat kind of film.

+1 for Dogma - if you can imagine Chris Rock as the 13th Disciple, George Carlin as a Cardinal, and Alanis Morissette as God... :pac:

Also, some I have that I think you'd like:
    Secretary
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    Almost Famous
    Sideways
    Buffalo '66

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is quality. Didn't think much of Rescue Dawn, too much whispering! :D

Two in the cinema at the moment: Gone Baby Gone (urban thriller of sorts) and In Search of a Midnight Kiss (quirky comedy drama) are quite similiar to a number of the ones you've liked so far.

+1 on Rescue Dawn - a bizarre but great film that bears little resemblence to the standard, run of the mill wartime story.

If you enjoy Wes Anderson films, try something like Me and You and Everyone We Know or some of Noah Baumbach's films (Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding and Kicking and Screaming are all very good) - hes the guy who wrote The Life Aquatic.

I think you might like Lucky Number Slevin as well. I did, anyway, and I liked most of the films mentioned here.

Also Fargo, Boogie Nights, Wonderland, Blow.
