Hi all, new homebrewer here. Just running through the motions with a kit this evening. Guess who dropped his new Hydrometer..... Grr! There's an Original Gravity on the pack of 1.060, I presume having made to recipe that this could be a good enough figure to stick with, before getting a new hydrometer during the week!

You are gonna need a hydrometer to check the final gravity (FG) of the beer anyway. Its good to check the original gravity(OG) also as you can work out the alcohol content when the beer is finished fermenting. If the reading stays stable for a few days at the recommended FG you know the beer is finshed fermenting.
By the way what kit are you brewing? and welcome to the hobby of brewing.

It's a Brewferm Kit - Ambiorix. There's no sign of anything happening yet, should I be worried? I have first time jitters!

it can take a little time form them to take of, especially if the dry yeast is old. hopefully it has started by now.

Turns out (I asked around) I'd killed the yeast by hydrating it with water at a temperature incompatible with life. I chucked in some more on Sunday afternoon, and have had lots of action overnight. Around 1% alc already, judging by the hydrometer reading - I wanted to get home all day to check it!

From the taste, it's very sweet, but no sign of TCP taste or anything there, which is the bad one.... innit?

That chlorophenols, I would be more worried about acid taste as this indicate acetic bacteria an they are near imposable to get rid of.

Looks like it going good for you know

Or you could give it another week in the primary and then just bottle or keg it
