The European Union Championships should help give us an indication of how well our fighters will do in the Olympics .

Also it's the last major tournament before the Olympics , and fighters really would want to be medalling here if they're capable of doing anything impressive in beijing .

For confidence maybe but if this championship is in the middle of their conditioning and they're looking to be at their absolute peak in Beijing, I won't mind the odd defeat.

    Any links?

Seriously hope the lads do well. I think our team has the measure of the English team at least. The draw for the Olimps will be vital. Nothing counts more in the Ammys than a good draw.

OOOooops. Posted a link to 2007 results.

    Anyway....

    From www.olympicsport.ie

David Oliver Joyce reached the semi-finals of the European Union Championships after Valentin Stoychev was retired in the third round in Cetniewo, Poland.

Joyce, of the St Michael's Athy club, was 23-8 up and had forced the Bulgarian featherweight into three standing counts before his corner threw in the towel in the third round of the quarter-final.

Darren Sutherland stormed into the semi-finals courtesy of a 28-12 win over French middleweight Samy Anouche, who took a standing count in the first round.

Sutherland will meet Germanys Stefan Haertel in Thursday's 75Kg semi-final, just two fights away from winning his second European Union Championship gold medal on the trot.

Paddy Barnes has received a bye straight into the light flyweight final where he will face Bedak Pal of Hungary or Lukasz Maszyzyk of Poland who clash in the 48Kg semi final.

Olympic Team Manager Jim Walsh confirmed that the five Irish boxers competing in Thursday's semi-finals are guarenteed at least bronze medals while Barnes, from the Holy Family club in Belfast, will take home at least a silver medal.

That's very good going to have 6 of the 10 entered fighters in the final .
Sutherland v DeGale is a very interesting match , there isn't much between those too .

Let's hope for 6 gold medals come sunday :)

That's a very good performance from the lads and hopefully that form can be kept all the way to the Olympics .

The difference in success the amateurs have had in the last 2 years to several years ago is astonishing .
