I was in the scrappy across from the Red Cow (just off the M50 on the Nass Road) earlier on in the week getting some parts for my Micra, and there is a pre-'92 Civic there. It's a LHD model (it was on Latvian plates). It's in rather rough condition however.

There is a VERY rare Isuzu VehiCROSS there aswell, although it itself has seen better days. While it may not be the prettiest of vehicles, it's the only one I've ever seen in this country. It would make for an interesting project.

Overall, it's a good scrapyard to just wonder around, and they're fairly cheap aswell.

Do these guys let you root around the cars on the lot? The scrappy I usually use dosn't let you go more that 10 feet from the front gate! I know if I'm allowed to root around to check out MK3 golfs I'd end up buying a load of stuff!!

whats the story, you look for what you want in the yard, tell them the parts you need , work out a price and go from there?

    Thanks

PS I had a 90D micra for a couple of years, took all the abuse I gave it, the scrappy in dun loaghaire kept it on the road after one joyrider and two other attempted joyrides! great little car, apparently still on the road!!

Yep, I think it is one of the last scrappy's you can root around yourself. They can take parts out for you, but they will let you take them out yourself if you want. Great it is! I hope they stay like that aswell.

Basically you go into the main office (a Portakabin), ask weather they have the car you're looking for parts for, and if they do, they'll just let you in the back, free to roam around as much as you want.

On another note, I'm restoring my Micra, same as your's, a 90-D. Parts are starting to become hard to find for them now though.

Excellent!! I'm going to head over ther during the week.
My old micra was a white 90D, last heard that it was going strong in Limerick, I bought it for £50 with the intention of running it for a month or two while I got a "real" car, it kept me going for over two years, during that time it passed two NCT's numerous attacks by scumbags, and thanks to scrap yards it cost me next to nothing to keep on the road, I sold it for €150 a couple of years ago! I loved how easy it was to work on, and the amount of abuse I gave it and it kept on coming back for more!

    Indeed, great cars they are.

About the scrapyard, they don't have as big a selection has they used to (they recently got the place covered in concrete), so maybe give it a while for their stock to build up. They are known to stock a few old cars at any given time. Over the past 12 months, I've seen them stock a Vauxhall Victor, Morris Minor, and a Mercedes W116.

Thanks, have to head over that direction on tuesday anyway, so I'll have a quick look to see what they have!

Regarding the Micra, after sourcing it's replacement I did my best to kill it but it was like the terminator :)

The yard in Laragh, Kilcock (Kilcock Dismantlers I think its called) is HUGE and they let you wander around if you've got some level of purpose. Its laid out by marque so that saves a lot of time finding what you want. Very very mucky though!

Was up there today, asked for an alternator for a mk2 golf gti and was told to just go find it myself

They have alot of K10 parts over there. Was there about a year ago and they had loads.

My old 91 K10 is still on the go after major abuse. I traded it in on my current car and was told he was going to sell it in Mayo only to see it in Dublin a few months ago. It still had the same seat covers and all in it. It really was a magic car.

Yeah, I don't think they will do more than tell you where everything is...

The offices, etc, are the most professional I've seen for a scrapyard in the south though. Most small parts of value are in there (mostly radio head units actually).

Jeez, i miss those kinda yards...the muck just adds to the fun!!
I remember one day trying to get an axle off a knackered capri and the guy who ran my local scrapyard bringing out a mad ratchet jack to lift the car off the ground and onto its side(there wasnt enough helpers to manually lift it),and that wasnt exactly years ago either, the place is all cleaned up now though..when i think back to all the interesting cars that were there,at one stage a few years back off the top of my head there was a few MK3capris,an ****IU reg beetle, woefully rotten,a****ZE reg hillman hunter,****IR reg renault 4l which wasnt in bad shape at all, SZX*** reg fiat 127,a good MK2 granada,a few MK1 golfs, and at one stage a FZF***fiat 850(i think anyway, looked like an abandoned resto project),all gone to the big squeeze now though:pac::(

Did you ever go to the scrappy out in Ballyseedy? I think his name is O'Dowd? It seems to be a massive site, taking in both sides of the road and with a massive variety of cars, trucks and fire engines. Not sure how accommodating they'd be if you wanted to wander around yourself to find stuff.
