I'm going to California on Monday for the summer and am trying to think of what phone to bring with me. I have a Nokia 5500 so if I buy a sim card in the USA will I be able to use my 5500 with a US prepaid sim?

I also have a 6230i and a 6300 that I could use, would those work?

    Thanks.

First of all, make sure the phone you plan to bring is unlocked
Check this by using another sim card in the phone
If for example all phones are on O2, borrow a sim from Tesco, 3, Vodafone or Meteor or any network for a minute and stick it in to see if it picks up the network. If its locked you will probably get an invalid sim card, or phone restricted message

If you have one which is unlocked and seems to pick up the other network ok, the thing to bear in mind is that all of these 3 phones are triband. In *some* parts of the US, some of the networks, including Cingular(now renamed to AT&T) use cell towers which are 850Mhz. All European triband phones work on 900/1800/1900 and will not work on the 850 frequency.

When using an American sim card, ask when purchasing if they operate on the 850 frequency in the area you are visiting or have a look at this link here yourself to help you make a decision.

    Hope this helps!

I'm just home yesterday from Florida. Coverage was absolutley DIRE. I have a vf 6300 and 6230i which i had over there. My mother also had a 6234 and sisters have 7373's and all of us had coverage problems. we're all on vodafone and the partner network is AT&T, my sister is meteor and the partner is T MOBILE. T MObile wouldnt allow acccess to my sister although when you do a manual search T MObile always comes up first indicating best coverage. Make sure you have ur 5500 unlocked otherwise I would just buy a cheap phone there, Saw a handy samsung which wasnt a bad one in WAL MART for $29. You could try a sim only in ur phone but i think ur best bet is to get a cheap phone because of the different operating frequencies;) enjoy america!
