.mkv and divx/xvid over network woes...

    Hi All,

I switched to a Mac Mini (1.66Ghz Core Duo, 2GB) about 1.5 years ago but I was dual booting Vista and Tiger up to recently (finally had it with Vista and went with Tiger only). However, there are a couple of problems driving me crazy...

I have a ton of xvid files on an SMB share and whenever I play them back over the network, at least on Wifi, I get glitches, freezes, etc quite often - very annoying. I would think that a compressed 350MB xvid file should have no problems, even on 802.11g. However, I've tried playing the videos from an AFP share (airdisk on my Airport Extreme base station) to see if things get any better and well, they do not... These xvid files play with no glitches in Windows, on the same Mac...

Recently, I got a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB MacBook Pro with a 256MB Nvidia 8600GS. I figured this should solve most problems with video over the network, since I could now use 802.11n and have more power overall. Nope! Videos still glitch often enough over WiFi, even on this system from both SMB and AFP shares... Why? I've heard of people even streaming full HDTV on their networks with no glitches, but for me, even bog standard xvid won't work well - on two separate Macs (but ok in Windows... though I hate Windows for everything else it brings).

Second problem is 1080p .mkv files. Forget it over the network... even with 802.11n. But even more aggravating, even locally, these glitch, freeze, etc! So, what the heck? The Mac Mini I can accept does not have enough power for these, but the MacBook Pro should have no issues at all? Any ideas? I've googled around with no really helpful suggestions so far... I've got Perian 1.1, QT 7.5 and the latest version of VLC...
