ah it is nice (and by far the best kept pay&play ive ever played at)

but the last few holes are killers after all the hills (especially the 16th-that fcuker must be a mile long up the hill!!)

stackstown is a great course, much better than other options. Very Hilly though compared to Elm Green!

Also everyone above except Fullstop seems to be getting Elm Park mixed up with Elm Green

Elm Park - Club on nutley lane, Donnybrook, not pay and play and not at all hilly. Very tight.

Elm Green - Pay and Play course in Dunsink. Nice enough but a bit short and slightly hilly as noted above
    about wrong course

Foxrock is an uber-well kept 9 hole just around the corner from Leppardstown, on Torquay Road.

It has a very old playing membership so I'd say getting a slot for a green fee wouldn't be that tough.

It's not the longest but a decent course to play - a really good test of your short game with well guarded, interestingly designed greens - especially for such an old course. Makes for plenty tricky pitches and bunker shots.

We head to the range in the golf centre the odd lunch-time and to be honest, we're always laughing at the state of the golf course. The greens seem to be just circles of slightly less shorter grass. The holes near the club house play down-hill with the green just continuing sloping AWAY from the fairway! I'm sure I sound hugely snooty here but to me, it just doesn't look like golf at all.

The range ain't great either. Balls aren't good and because of a kind of a hump accross the range about 120 yards out you can't see your ball hit the turf if you hit anything from 130-160 yards...

Given the kind of area you're talking about (it seems we never get to talk about golf on the south side so at last I can be of some use!), disregarding more expensive options like Powerscourt, I'd say your best bets might be Foxrock, Glen of the Downs (back down the N11 southbound) or Old Conna (toward Shankill). They'll all be slightly more expensive than some public options but for value-for-money, you're enjoyment and improvement would be much better off IMO.

    Interesting you should mention Powerscourt...quite a funny story;

I was heading to Stackstown, turned off the M50 at Firhouse (first mistake) and then thought I just had to find a road back along..ended up going through the bloody Mountains (not being from Ireland - I was well and truly lost). I was following a big van and started thinking they were looking for a secluded spot to stash a body or something it was that bloody sparse!! Anyway just kept following the road and ended up at Enniskerry..saw a sign for Powerscourt and thinkig that I just drove all over the backwaters of wherever I was, had to get a game in somewhere..forked out the 99 squids and played the East course..is it just me or is that quite a tricky course?!?! Back 9 was uber-glorious though...

I'm off to play Powerscourt in a couple of weeks... looking forward to it. Not certain which course yet though. I once got lost Bromavinci-style coming back from the waterfall at Powerscourt. Scary times as the red 'no petrol' light came on while we were in the middle of the mountains. Actually don't know how we made it back.

Sat nav will be used this time for sure!

    ShriekingSheet,

Foxrock is only open to vistors on mondays/thursday and fridays. Green fees are 65E which is steep enough.

Agree with you about leopardstown. Its a poor course but good for someone getting back into the game. Driving range isn't the best. The bays theselves are good but the balls and the amount of hills bring it down. Prefer Spawell range myself.

Stepaside 9 hole is near leopardstown and is decent if not spectacular. PLanning on going to Dublin Mountain golf course, ballinascorney, kilmashougue and glencullen. An ideas/opinions would be welcome!

If anyone's heading down towards Wicklow direction, Kilcoole is a nice 9 hole course just outside the village. Green fees are reasonable too, €25 for 18/€15 for 9 during the week.

Ballinascorney is better than Dublin Mountain, although both aren't great. Never played either of the latter two.

I learned to play as a junior member at Ballinascorney. It's not kept well and is a very quirky course but it's not as bad as stepaside or leppardstown.

Your right about it only being open to visitors Monday's, Thursdays and Fridays. 18's and overs are on on Monday so you might struggle to get out then although the tee isn't booked or anything for them. I'm a member in Foxrock and I have to say that the course is in immaculate condition at the minute. The green's are in the best condition I have ever seen them in my 14 years there. Came second in the captains prize there (well technically I came second but due to me being an Intermediate I couldn't come 1st, 2nd, 3rd or win any of the overall class prizes, only day prizes - stupid or what:mad:!!) and the greens were a joy to putt on. The €65 is a bit steep but you won't be too disappointed with it IMO.

Thanks for the info ShriekingSheet and BillyBoy. Any idea what the green fees are for ballinascorney and whether visitors are allowed at weekends?

As for foxrock, I think I may take a half day on a friday in the next couple of weeks and go for a game. Sounds like its in good shape.
