I strongly recommend buy a new one ... rather than risk damage to your Mac, or electrocution.

me too its definitely not worth the risk. It will be at the back of your mind every time you leave it alone plugged in.

A picture says a thousand words.
    Post 1 or 2; maybe it's fixable.

You're not going to get electrocuted... it's only about 19v or so.
Is your laptop still under warranty? If anything ever does happen and Apple see a home rewire job, they'll invalidate the warranty and you'll be fscked.
Buy another and fix the broken one... then you'll have a spare.
BTW, how did this happen in the first place. I thought the whole idea of magsafe was to prevent undue stress on the connector and/or your mac ending up on the floor.

i'll have a picture tonight, my stupid camera wont focus on the charger so all my pics are blurred. been using my dads charger for the last week which has to go back to him on monday so i'll throw up the pics and if anyone had any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

oh and btw i tend to know what i am doing with electronics once someone points me in the right direction so i am willing to take the risk.

EDIT: Gerryk its out of warranty and it happened from wrapping wire around the adapter, this made it lose, so i had to mess around with it to get it charging each time, so then i taped the wire in place but then the wire started to melt and here we are!

That appears to be a burn or melt mark on it. Was that mark building up over time or did it appear all of a sudden?

i think it just appeared all of a sudden, once i noticed it i then began to notice a melting plastic smell. my thinking is it just needs to be cut to get rid of the dodgy section and put back together.

Ive done this successfully and have a few suggestions.

    1. The case is laser sealed ( bonded well! ) so the best approach is to score around where the two halves join with a knife ( dont score any part of your anatomy! ). Then use a screwdriver as described in the article to split the halves.

    2. Once you have the PSU open cut off the charred bit and strip the cables ready to solder them. Dont use insulation tape or twist the cables because thats OK for house wiring where there is no strain or movement of cables. Suggestion number 19 in the link is a good one. Before you solder get some heatshrink cable ( comes in many sizes/colours from Radionics, Farnell or any Electronic supplier ). Pass this over the individual wires and also larger diameter for the whole lot. Dont forget to do this before you solder!.

    3. In your case the damage is right at the PSU which is a good thing because the solder repair will be inflexible and can remain inside the plastic cover. Temporarily tape up the two plastic halves and test your repair. If its OK glue the two halves together. Remember that voltage coming from the cable to computer wont do you any harm but the voltage in the PSU itself is mains hence the reason it is sealed.

Be careful and you can do the job successfully.

ah ok fair enough, was looking for non fiddled with examples :)

this is cropping up a fair bit and potentially dangerous so am trying to get a few local examples together... but need them left as is...
