    I dont think you can substitute one with another to be honest.
    But its a good start, I'm in Cork feel free to drop down to kendo when ever your around this way, other than that I think its a good start, but for what you describe you will find it better in a class environment, more structured and a more imposing sense of discipline.

    Any japanese budo could help, karate, judo etc

    Peter much better off getting involved in a club rather than individual training in my opinion. Not sure about the martial arts clubs in wexford county or town but one of the lads here will inform you soon.

    Noel McHugh of East Coast Ju-Jutsu is down in Wexford. I've trained with him a fair few times and he's superb, as well as safe and very friendly.
