Alcohol Intolerance/Allergy

Any help or experience out there?

Through my 20s and 30s I was well able to put it away - wine, beer, spirits. From time to time I got massive hangovers but usually only when I went way over the top.

BUT in the last few years I can get a tremendous hangover (24hour vomiting, blinding headache etc) from as little as a sip of alcohol (e.g. recently a tiny sip of white wine gave me 36 hour reaction). Doesn't seem to matter what kind. OK the obvious answer is GIVE IT UP. And really that's where I'm at - but its a v dull life without even a glass of wine with a meal. As well I spend a lot of time in FRance and adore to have a glass of wine with the meal.

Have been to Dr who says just don't drink and same advice from homeopathic guy and acupuncturist. I've read somewhere that alochol intolerance can stem from a lack of a particular enzyme. I'd give just about anything a try to get back to being able to drink with a meal. Any help out there?

OP - the lack of a certain enzyme thing is something prevalent among Asian people. It's not something that can just happen overnight.

You can be intolerent to alcohol though. Personally, I get a histamine reaction unless I drink sparingly. I'd get red blotches on my chest and feel incredibly drowsy after maybe 3 glasses of wine, for instance. If I take a hayfever tablet (anti-histamine) before a night out, i'll be able to drink a bit more. However...I never get hangovers!
