Are apples litter?

OH had an argument about this last night, he wouldn't let me put my apple core in the ashtray of his new car, I said throwing them out the window was littering, he said I was crazy.

I did through it out the window and now feel guilty about it because I really despise littering.

So who is right, does throwing an apple out the window (in the country) constitue littering?

Thing is apples rot or are picked up my forest animals such as squirrels and dogs in the street but in these politically correct ' we are watching what you do/dont put into your bins '' days , it would be considered by many to be rubbish

If you throw it on the street I think it's considered litter. Doesn't matter if it's biodegradable or not.

No of course it isn't, If the apple was never picked it would have ended up on the ground anyway and its not gonna last long anyway

The problem with throwing plastic bags on the ground is that they take thousands of years to degrade but an apple will degrade in days (probably be eatin by animals)

I don't think it is litter, b:rolleyes:ut I always feel guilty when I do it !!! My wife always throws it onto grass or a hedge rather than the road as this method makes her feel better !

If I was in town or a built up area I wouldn't throw an apple out the window but if I was out in the countryside I'd have no problem doing it.

I'd say its litter in the word of the law, but throwing it away is certainly not going to do any damage.

That's why I mentioned it was in the country in my OP! I'd no way do it in the town as I feel it looks unsightly and is less likely to be picked up by animals!

I wonder could you be prosecuted for doing it?

    Totally agree.

Pretty disgusting if thrown on a street or pavement, but no problem if thrown into a hedgerow.

Also be sure not to hit a cyclist with it!

TBH, I would be more worried about the highlighted words above:D

yeah, Its litter in a car ashtray.....and on a street.....You'd be doing well to find it in a hedge so go for it.

I live in the country and I wouldn't mind apple cores as they are biodegradable but I am always picking up takeaway coffee cups and lucozade bottles along our road verge.
I am very tempted to get a small motion activated cctv system to see who is throwing the rubbish.

I hear ye, I take my dog for a walk in the local forest, it's a real beauty sopt and the amount of rubbish there (including big bags that have obviously fly-tipped) would just make you cry.

    It's disgusting, it really is.
It is basically saying to everyone else that I have a right to ruin your enjoyment and environment because I am too lazy to deal with my waste properly.
I have some great ideas to deal with car drivers that litter :D

Yeah its brutal, We've hedges both sides of the road just outside a village at home, and it needs to be delittered at least once a week during the summer. Its not so bad during the winter though

I saw a newspaper report of a courtcase about 6 months ago where a judge threw out (pun intended) a litter charge because he deemed an apple to not be litter.

Yeah City-litter is a whole different thing

I actually saw a poster sayin it takes 2 years for a banana skin thrown in the path to biodegrade!!!

They're unlikely to be collecting apple cores - to get back to the OP's question.

To the letter of the law you are littering but an applecore in a hedgerow is :

    1. A great way of feeding songbirds and other small herbivores that are under enough pressure allready at no cost.

    2. Perfectly biodegradeable in no time.

I throw black bags full of rubbish out the car window, so i doubt your apple will hurt anyone.
