Logged on to pay the above online.

You have to key in a 17 or so long ref number and then a 5 digit pin.
You are then asked to confirm address etc and asked to provide either an email address, or a phone number.

Unless you do you cant pay online:(

Seems a bit strange that they insist on getting that information from you.

the reference number is probably from your current licence if you have one and the email address info is asked for to send you weekly/daily reminders when your next renewal date is near.

It might be slight overkill alright, but the 17-digit reference number is not private, the 5-digit pin is. So they need the reference number and some private authorisation. They also need email/phone to contact you if there was any problem with issueing the license or processing your payment, etc.

To be honest , this and the motortax online are one of the best initatives around .
Never had a problem with either , find them both fast and efficient.

If only all gvmt/civil service things could work as well.
