I'm hoping to finally get something done with my website. I've been planning on building a css/html gallery myself, but has anyone used this? Seems alright?

    http://jalbum.net/

I just want something clean and simple and not flash-based, for maybe 20-30 shots max.

I tried jalbum before, looked nice, but wasn't so easy to update as far as i remember. And then i actually decided to go for flash. You might try Lightroom for quick, simple and fully customizable templates.

I would deffo advise lightview, very easy to install and looks great. If your using wordpress you can use this plugin to enable lightview.

It's only within the past 2months they start charging for the program it's well worth it and you can always download it and pay at a later day (just don't for get... ok ;) )

If you need a hand with setting it up Sinead, give me a shout.

p.s. Good call with staying away from Flash

Oh you could also use Lightbox.

Hmmmm! I hadn't thought of an overlaid gallery at all. Do you use this yourself? I had wanted to steer clear of javascript too - keep everything as simple and fast and accessible as possible, but finding a good compromise between cleanliness of design and navigation and actually making the pictures a decent enough size is proving difficult. This could be a solution? It'll be a static gallery for the most part - I don't plan on updating very much so that shouldn't be an issue..

Is anyone still designing with 800 x 600 in mind btw? I had thought of dropping it altogether (or giving only the most cursory nod), but I've recently been turned on to EEEPCs and since I'm getting one myself I'll want to be able to view my own damn page properly! Hmmm.. might start a new thread on that one..

JAlbum is pretty good and easy to use, though I haven't used it in a while. It's got some quite nice skins available for it

Another quick and easy option, depending on the purpose of your web site, is to embed a gallery from picasa web.

When you've uploaded an album to picasa web, click on the embed slide show option on the left hand side, copy the html text into your web site and there you go.

Ive used jAlbum as well, found it easy to use and pretty easy to update, got rid in the end in favour of flash. If interested in flash make sure to give swishmax2 a try out, its so easy to use.

Just been reading up on the Lighbox, there's a new version out, http://www.lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/ . It sounds pritty cool and the example looks good.

Don't think there's any harm in using javascript if you are familiar with it. In fact I'd say that it would be hard to avoid it if your not using flash if you want your site to look decent. I reckon avoid flash if you can. The combo of javascript and css and you'll get cool results with very little hassel.

I've used this on plenty of websites. There is nothing wrong with using js, it's simple, fast and accessible. Even if you do update the gallery with pictures all you have to do is pop them in the .htm page, you don't have to go near the js (at any time if you don't want to) or reconfigure anything.

I wouldn't bother designing for 800x600 anymore. 1024x768 seems to be the lowest res any new computer are coming out as these days. I'd design for around 980-1000 pixels wide and whatever height. I just got a new laptop yesterday and it was defaulted to 1920x1080 so I think the days of 800x600 are truely gone.

    Best of luck :)

My concern with js is issues with pop-up and script blockers, but you guys don't seem to have run into problems with it then? I'm pretty good with scripting it so fiddling with the code wouldn't worry me. Hmmmm.. I'll have a play with everything over the weekend I think.

Thanks a lot guys! :D Lots of food for thought...
