My 2nd provisional driving licence has just run out.

I was just going to apply for a new provisional,I think its called a driving permit now and then apply for the test.

I have just read on the transport website that to apply for a third provisional, that I need to have proof that I have applied for the test.

How do I go about this now?

Can I apply for the test seeing as my licence has run out,it looks like im in a catch 22,I need a licence to apply for the test and I need proof of a test application to get a 3rd provisional licence?

    Thanks

You don't need the licence to apply for the test, per se, they don't check its valid... apply online with drivingtest.ie and then go to the MTO with the printed off receipt (you also get a confirmation within a day or two)

Its out of date about a month already?

Will I not need a valid licence to take the test,i.e on the day?

    thanks

You will yes, but by then you'll have got your third surely? Your test date will be weeks to months away.

I misunderstood what you said.Your saying that I should apply for the test and then apply for my 3rd provisional using the reciept for the test.

So when my test comes I will have my provisional.

Is there a time period that after your provisional runs out you cant apply for another.I checked there and my provisional is out 3 months and I have been driving every day lol.

    Thanks for your help.

You think driving without a license is funny?
Bet if you had an accident your insurance company wouldn't see the funny side

There is, but its more than 3 months (try ten years, thats what it is for full licences). Not 100% sure but its definitely in the years.

You *might* not have been insured for those three months.... usually for full licence holders all it cares about is that you've ever held a licence and haven't been disqualified but it might not be the same for provisionals.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Have you been incommunicado for the last few months? Why the hell didn't you get the finger out and do the test before now? You won't be able to drive unaccompanied from July.

Proof that the provisional licence system needed to be sorted if we ever wanted it.

OP, get the finger out and get your test and then remember that driving in this country is a privilege, not a right.

If the Provisional Licence is lapsed over 5 years then it's back to scratch again - i.e. Theory Test and 1st Learner Permit.

Persons on a 3rd Provisional Licence/Learner Permit have always been required to be accompanied at all times.

The change on the 30th June only applies to those on a 2nd Provisional Licence/Learner Permit in category B.

Thanks, wasn't sure, thought you'd be the man to know for sure.

Knew it wasn't as little as 3 months though!

my 3rd provisional licensed lapsed in December 2007. i just never renewed it since as i'm not driving at all. i tried in the last few weeks to register for a driving test but when i put in the last current driving number from 2007 license it won't accept it on www.drivingtest.ie. it's a total catch 22 situation. anyone know what to do?? i've never sat a driving test so have no proof.

    Old thread, but anyway...

    From the application site:
In order to apply on line, you must have:

    • Your Current Valid Driver Number.
      • This is ITEM 5 on your Learner Permit

That would indicate to me that you apply in other ways (not online) with an expired license, provided you have a new license by the time of the test.
