Infra Red on Nikon D40

Has anyone tried doing IR with a D40? Or any other modern Nikons? What kind of filters did you use? What kind of exposure comp did you have make (ie is using a deep red filter or a genuine IR filter better?)

This site http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/infrared/ seems to think results will be mixed from many modern digital cameras.

I am ordering a lens and am thinking about chucking in a IR filter too but not if it'll be total waste of money!

    Cheers!

I don't know about the D40 but the D50 is very good for IR photography with a Hoya R72 filter. I use this combination for the shots below. For me, I take a white balance reading from the grass, then shoot at f/8 for approx 1-2 secs during bright daylight.

Hmnn I read a bit about this before and I'm only after buying myself my first DSLR. I really like the look of a good infra red photo. Your's look fantastic Darren.

    Adorama are out of stock!

Looks good for the D40 too tho'. From a customer review...
I have been shooting photos on and off for a couple of years, but got back into it when I picked up the Nikon D40. To get things going, I saw some photos in infrared and wanted to get the same effect without forking out the cash just yet. The filter worked like a charm, but from what I have experienced is just a filter for the outside in the sun. Not for use in-doors or at night. I love the fact that I can shoot awesome pics, but when you constantly have to remove the filter to focus it can get tiring. But that is the only low point of this filter. Everything else is awesome. Word of advice, if you want the infrared look then use B&W setting. But if you use normal color you will get a pretty cool looking magenta/infrared effect.

DarrenG, how are you getting the really nice understated colours in there too? I thought IR would come out a bit freaky in colour. Usually it's something you see done in BW or monochrome.

do you take the custom WB with the filter on or off?

With the filter on. You will notice the difference when you review and process the photos as they won't look red.

My canon says it cant use the image taken with the lens on for the custom WB. Any advice?
