Registering an imported classic - ZV or age plate?

    Hi there,

I have bought a 1977 TR7 in the UK and drove it over. As it is 30 years old, there is no import duty (VRT) or tax to be paid - great!!!

When I rang up the licencing office in Wicklow, they asked me if I wanted a ZV plate or a 77 WW plate. Does it matter?

All the ZV plates I have seen are black with silver numbers - do they have to be as that would not look right on a '77 car.

    Any thoughts?

On the VRT I thought that you had to pay a fee of €50 to re-register?
On the plate, it's really down to what you reckon looks right & what suits the car.
77 -- XXX may look better than ZV *****, guess would depend on length of plate, amt. of #'s etc
Find out what number you will be getting under both instances then decide. One is not really more authentic than the other IMO.

.............black and silver would have been a correct style for 1977, amongst others, however it would be the style of plates that would make it authentic or otherwise.

For me 77 WW would look hideous, unless you got a low number and could space it nicely along the lines of 77W W--

I would go for the 77WW,as the ZV plates have gone to 5 digits now and look awfull in my eyes, not authentic at all,as old irish registrations only ever went up to four numbers. The new wicklow ZVs are from ZV88201 to ZV91200,so you would get a number somewhere in between them if you do decide on ZV...

.........Yeah the 5 digit ZV's look poxy, has Dublin gone over the 10,000 yet ? Are all Counties now 5 digits?

Whatever option you go for you've got 7 digits to fit on a plate.

Easy to do either with UK 3 1/8" high digits. For proper 3 1/2" digits I'd chose either:

ZV xxxxx plate if it has at least a couple of "1" digits in it. Then it'll fit the plate.

77 WW xx plate if you can buy yourself a low number. That's also fit.

I prefer period reflective plates of the black/white & black/red variety. Even better if they have rivet on raised plastic digits. :D

Im not sure if dublin has gone over the 10,000 mark, but if they havent they must be close enogh as the new allocation started at ZV7201,i reckon nearly all counties are five digit by now, kerry went over two years ago...
