Want to buy first DSLR

    Hi guys,

Have decided I would like to buy a DSLR in the near future (within next 2/3 months) and would like some advice on which to buy. I have read the FAQ and have whittled the camera options to two, I have found what I think are good value bundles for both.

The two packs I have been looking at on Pixmania are:

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/764950/art/nikon/d60-af-s-dx-vr-nikkor-18.html

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/1026139/art/canon/eos-450d-ef-s-18-55-is-le.html

I'm thinking that the Canon is better value based on what is available in the pack and from my research (limited enough) it appears to be the superior camera. Comments would be welcome though.

Also, advice on alternative sites/shops to use would be good too.

Did you try Jessops and Amazon: they're usually the most competitive. Jessops ship to Ireland, don't think Amazon do, but if you know someone in England / Northern Ireland you can have it sent to, they will be the cheaper option

Thanks for that, I was looking around Jessops there and they have a very interesting offer on the following camera:

    http://www.jessops.com/Store/s73443/1-136-481/Home/Cameras--and--Lenses/Digital-SLRs/Sony/Alpha-A200-%2b-18-70mm-f-and-35-56-Lens/details.aspx

Would anyone have an opinion on this as a cheaper starting option or is the 200 euro saving not worth it in the long run?

What about the 400D, I think the 450D is a bit overkill for your first DLSR. I just bought a 400D myself from www.parkcameras.com, cheapest price I could find and the shipping was pretty fast. Ordered on Saturday, shipped on Monday, arrived in my house yesterday!

I suppose it's down to personal choice though. I bought the 450D and there are a couple of subtle differences. Live View (indispensible) being the main one. Others include bigger LCD and newer sensor.

If I was you I'd buy the camera and lens from www.komplett.ie (€660 delivered) and buy a Class 6 card (not a class 4 as included on Pixmania).

Whatever you choose - enjoy it!

    Freddie.

    What's the diff between a class 4 and a class 6 card? :o

Higher transfer rate (the data writes to the card faster).:)

    Hi all,

Sorry to crash this thread but on the same lines as the OP, any firm ideas on which is better all round starter for a complete DSLR novice....Sony Alpha 200 (€496) or Canon EOS 400D (€649).

    Thanks

Quick observation here , if were talking about prices in the long run ,

Take a look at the prices of the lenses for the Sony's , and whats available , then take a look at the prices of the Canon , and whats available ,

    http://www.technikdirekt.de/main/en/foto/fotodigital/objektive/obj-canon/page.html

It would seem to be a no brainer that the Canon is the better option for starting out. If you want to cover the basic 28mm to 300 mm with quality lenses for as little outlay as possible then Canon is the best bet.

Sony Lenses are considerably more expensive and you have to go third party to cover the range for the same price as Canon.

Then of course theres the lens issue , you will spend more on lenses than you ever will on the body , but once you have a collection of lenses you are locked in , it would make sense to get " locked in " to one of the more established makes like Canon or Nikon .... that always works out better financially in the long run.
Even if you switch systems totally , its better to be trying to shift a lot of Canon or Nikon glass than Sony or Sigma glass.

Thanks Mathias, I had always heard as a rule of thumb to go for the established camera brands and your information just confirms and explains that. Maybe I should look into second hand cameras as a beginner. Thanks again for your help.
