Noob needs advice

I know you are probably fed up with people asking this question but here goes.

I'm thinking of buying a bike for pretty basic evening cycles around town and the odd weekend off-road. What would be a decent bike that will not break the bank? It wouldn't have to have all the latest tech as I wouldn't notice it anyway.

I'm not sure what my budget is yet. I know you get the quality you pay for but as it will be more of a past time than anything else I wouldn't like to spend too much.

Until you at least put a ballpark figure on your budget, it's hard to help you out.

How serious is the off road going to be? If not very (tracks), I would suggest a hybrid with wide (say 700x35 or 700x40) tyres, look to spend around the €400 mark and you will get something decent.

I've been riding a few trails on one of these the last few weeks and found it superb, nice and light too so you get around commuting on it
