Yeah, been going around for a long time now.

Would hate to see this re-made, the original is simply a masterpiece.....

Not to mention, it'd probably be aimed towards the PG-13 market....

Id like to see it,used to love that movie have not seen it in ages, id say it aged badly , it could look very good, even with a half decent script I like to see this!

Theres no reason the remake it. The original is fantastic. If they do, I really hope they dont go down the road of Die Hard, A v P, Terminator etc and make it a 12s film.

    Rambo did it well.

Robocop would be terrible if it was PG-13. Not worth watching.

They did loads of horrendous made for tv films. Awful stuff.

There's a part in one of the Prime Directive movies with Robocop and the other Robocop fighting a bunch of mercenaries - lots of guns, killing and gore. Great stuff. Though a lot of those movies were pants - the first one with the 'Bone Machine' was hilariously crap.

Better then Robocop 3 overall anyway.

In fairness, if the original Robocop were released today, it would be a lot closer to a 12s/PG-13 than an 18 cert.

I think the franchise a bit too outdated anyway. It doesn't have the cool of Die Hard or Terminator.

We're talking about the movie whose first scene has a guy shot about 200 times and utilizes about 1,000 blood squibs, right??

It might fall within 15 or 16, which most violent films of a fantasy nature do lately - Land of the Dead for example, a gorefest receiving only a 15A - but absolutely nowhere near PG/12's.

Inevitable the way the industry is. Could be a brilliant movie nontheless. Just hope it's not a CGI-fest.

The most annoying thing about how movies are released is the way the save the 18's cert for DVD.
Its released in the cinema as 15/16(what the fùck is that 16 cert about like?!?) and then there is the "Uncut/Too hot for cinema release".

It angries up the blood so it does!

If you click here you can have a look at the teaser poster for the new film.

edit: sorry just noticed that it's contained in the first like op posted. That said read karlhung.com :D

Man this could go either way, it would have to be 18's to be any way decent and keep the fans happy

Wow, in an attempt to update Robocop they've made him look even more outdated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Looks like they made robocop into a Cylon (original). He is all shiny looking. Much better looking in the original when he looked like he was made out of Titanium or something.

    No, No, Nooo!!

The original is a classic! There's too many memorable scenes in Robocop that couldn't be adapted:

The failed presentation of ED-209 *dodododododododododododododododo....*
The brutal scene of Murphy being shot to shìt - no way that would be allowed nowadays.
Robocop using his fist-spike as a weapon into Red Foreman's throat.

It'll be presumably water-down to the ranks of either PG-13 or 15s like the petty sequels & subsequent TV films *Bleeeuuuurgh!* - that being said, you can get away with a lot nowadays on 15s but even if Robocop was realised today it would still be 18's IF Verhoven was allowed to keep all the violent bits in.
ED-209 will be CGI - though done in Transformers quality that mightn't be a bad thing.

Bah, who knows! Way too early to make assumptions and for all we know there might be a competent team put in charge of this and we might get something dark & "grit-e-er" along the lines of Batman Begins...............maheh, heh heh heh..........aha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Murphy also get's his hand blown off which was quite graphic for the time. And what about the the scene where Robocop kills Clarence with a spike to the neck. There is no way in hell it would get anything under an 18's
cert if it was released today.

In the Director's Cut where Murphy is shot to shìt an added bit shows him getting his arm blown off. That was removed cuz it was deemed way too violent. Heh, go figure!

I watched it recently with a few friends and we pretty much concluded it's one of the most perfect films ever made. A remake is a terrible idea.

    Boo-urns.

Robocop was a masterpiece. Doing a remake would be like pissing on a Picasso.

To the poster that said Robocop would get a 12s rating if released today - Well, I don't know about you but for me, 20 years later the film still stands out as shockingly brutal and violent (mainly the "Murphy" and "Mr Kenny" scenes).

AFAIR Verhoeven was forced to trim those scenes to secure an 'R' rating in the States, as it was being threatened with NC-17 because of the brutal and sadistic nature of the violence.

Bah, I'll believe this when I see it. The original film has aged very well imo, no need whatsoever to remake it. I could see them doing a kind of re-imagined sequel similar to The Incredible Hulk though.

And as already said there's no way the original would get anything less than an 18/R rating today. The nihilistic tone would enough. Mind you, many of the cuts Verhoeven had to make to avoid getting an NC-17 in '87 made the violence appear much more realistic than was original intended. There's some great satire in the film that was lost in the subsequent sequels and tv shows. Although Kershner at least made some attempt to emulate Verhoeven's style.

Hmnnn why can't Hollywood concentrate on making more original movies rather than rehashing movies we all love.

As Duggy said we might get lucky and a good team could be put in charge of this movie, but is that likely- probably not? As with so many new releases it's core fanbase will be overlooked in order to secure a certificate for a younger audience meaning a much waterdowned movie and loosing the essence of the original.

Im not sure if it would be as good. I remember seeing robo first when i was a teen and finding some of the stop motion scenes of ED-209 creepy as a result of the Stop motion. Altho that was also partly due to the cinematography.

    +1

When I 1st saw Robocop as a kid the whole thing revolving around ED-209 creeped the hell outta me. His voice, faceless & emotionless design, and especially the stop-motion sequences. Funny how just that creeped me out and all the violence didn't have an effect *twitch*

I'm still impressed at how they managed to work the stop-motion model into the cinematography. The scenes were filmed 1st and then the animators had to get ED-209 to mix perfectly with them, imagine all the work and time that had to be done for that!!

Anywho, either some smart idiots will get the novel idea to change his design radically or he'll have a small cameo for the fans.

while i agree that a remake would be a mistake , there are reasons why it would not work that have not been mentioned yet in here
robocop was much more than a movie with wonderfull mindless violence , it was a savage satire on regans 1980,s america where the view was that everything and anything should be sold to the highest bidder and privatised ( the police force were owned by a private company )

this type of commentary would not be all that relevant today where reganomics and thatcherism is old hat

The orininal has one of my favourite movie lines...
"bitches leave". there is no need for a remake tbh.

Too true. Indeed, Robocop was packed to the gills with classic lines :

    "Can you fly Bobby?"

"You probably dont think I'm a very nice guy, do you?"
    "Buddy I think you're slime"

"Dead or alive you're coming with me"

    "I'm cashing-you-out, Bob"

"Robo, Robo, any message for all the kids watching at home"
    "Stay out of trouble"

    "Dick, I'm very disappointed"
    "I'm sure it's only a glitch"

    "Too bad about Kenny huh?"
    "Life in the big city...."

"Are you a college-boy or somethin?"

    "You're gonna be a bad motherf**ker!"

    etc. etc.
Now I want to go and watch it again....:D

saw this last week, robocop looked pretty cool still.. but his enemy robot.. jesus christ, there are teenagers home computers now that would do a better job of that ****. if the spirit of the original was maintained a remake could be pretty sweet, but it won't be.

FFS, how about inveting something new hollywood? has anyone noticed there haven't been any original scifi characters in a long long time?

The first robocop was brilliant anyway, Peter Weller IS robocop and other actors did a perfect job too. Who is going to play Clarence Boddicker? or Dick Jones? or Officer Anne Lewis?

Interestingly enough, Weller is a method actor and stuck to that form of acting in preperation for his role in the movie!

There is ONLY 1 Clarence Boddicker!
