Forgive my perhaps stupid question, but I'd like to ask your opinion on the matter of on street parking restrictions.

I've always been of the impression that a street with the traditional P sign, means parking is allowed. And with a strike through, parking not allowed. I also thought that a plaque underneath with pay parking details underneath meant you had to pay to park.

I have been informed by my local town council of two facts that I never knew.

    1. If you drive into any town which, on the outskirts, displays signs saying pay parking is in operation, then you must pay to park anywhere in that town. This includes on streets which do NOT display signs saying its a pay parking zone, but do display only the sign saying parking is permitted. (white background in red circle with black P).

    2. If you are on a public road: no matter where, if you park inside a painted car parking space, then you are expected to pay for parking. Again, this includes places where there are no signs indicating that its a pay parking zone, again they do display the parking permissable sign.

I dont know if these are little snippets that I've missed in my 13 years of driving, but has anyone else heard the of above? I always honestly thought that the parking sign in the area in question would tell you if it was a disk or residents area with one of the little rectangular plaques. Or am I being told some colorful lies?
    thanks

    Sounds like bullshit to me.

AFAIK they have to put up signs (near the parking spaces) to say it's pay parking and also what hours the pay parking operates.

    Same as bus lanes.

If it's true then it's news to me too.
