Check out the Benjamin Black books, relatively new Irish crime fiction but seems to be getting good reviews all round.

I really like PD James, for someone who is in her 80's (I think, possibly only 70's) she writes really well paced novels.

I also have a totally soft spot for Agatha Christie, though she's really more murder mystery, but who doesn't love Hercule and nosey Miss Marple.

    James Ellroy
    George Pelecanos
    James Sallis
    Elmore Leonard
    Henning Mankell
    John Burdett
    Dennis Lehane
    David Peace
    Don Winslow
    Derek Raymond

Are some of my favorites. You won't go wrong with any of them.

Christopher Brookmyre and Carl Hiaasen. Black humour FTW.

Ian Rankin - in small doses though, he can get quite depressing.

Really like John Case, Allan Folsom, Harlan Coben's stand alone books (ie not Myron Bolitar books), Mo Hayder, Tess Gerritsen, Jeffrey Deaver & Michael Connelly
