No sound on MacBook

In the middle of a series of annoyances - caused, I think, by my dog knocking the plug out of the socket when my MacBook was juicing up an iPod - it's lost its sound, which is a pain because I need it professionally.

I've looked at the system sound prefs and changed from SoundFlower to Internal Speaker; I've zapped the PRAM and repaired permissions. Any further ideas gratefully received.

just a thought ... but have you tried plugging in headphones to it / external speakers ?

(I was of course assuming you were using its speakers for sound)

Actually, I just did that - plugged headphones in and out several times, and suddenly the internal speakers came back.

    Hmmm.

Sounds like the microswitch inside the headphone jack got stuck and it thought there was a connector plugged in. I've heard of people having to wingle toothpicks around in there trying to fix it. It's a known problem with some Macbooks.

It didn't take any tumbles. I get the impression that the MacBook is a lot more fragile than the MacBook Pro. (My last computer was a PowerBook G4, predecessor of the Pro.)

Its a known issue with MBs and MBPs. I had a thread on it last year some time, http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055107425
