Anybody know if there are any drawbacks to laying carpet directly over laminate. there is plenty of clearance for the door and the laminate is in good condition( its down about 5 years). also would there be a need for underlay. I could take up the laminate but I'm worried about the gap under the skirting board.

I placed carpet directly over laminate about 13 years ago. It was not a fitted carpet but rather a large piece of carpet edged which covered the entire floor area except for about 2cm around the edge of the room.

Both carpet and laminate remain in very good condition.
