I use voipcheap.com on my laptop.

I recently moved to NTL for my broadband very recently and they supplied a SA EPC2203 modem (scientific Atlanta), and a netgear wireless router, which I assume is the standard hardware they give out.

The modem has two rj11 phone ports on the back, is it poss for me to get a regular tel handset connected to the rj11 and use it for voip, directly off the modem. I think the term for this is ATA,

    Thanks Folks

According to the modem data sheet it does indeed have 2 telephone ports for voip.

The ATA or modem has to be setup to work with a particular voip provider. I'd imagine that access to the configuration is not available to the end user, so it might be difficult to use an independent supplier such as Blueface. It should be straightforward enought to get UPC to set you up with their voip service though. They have been agressively marketing it in recent months. Bear in mind that their pricing is only slightly better than Eircoms, and they insist in charging 'line rental' for voip.

If you want to use voipcheap or blueface with a traditional handset, cordless phone etc, you can always buy your own ATA and use that.

Having just read the user's guide the 2 RJ11 sockets are for cable telephony. To use Voipcheap or Blueface or any other voip provider you would need an ATA. The date sheet describes them as VOIP sockets but the user guide says they are for cable telephony.
