The bridge and tailpiece are missing. You need both of them to put strings on the guitar.

You'll need a tune-o-matic bridge and a 'stop' tailpiece. :)
The tricky part is that you'll have to find one that matches the post spacing already on the guitar, or the 2 "metal things" nearest to the pickup.

Otherwise, if you can't find a bridge that matches your spacing - you'll have to remove the existing posts, plug the holes and redrill for the new posts.

ok, thanks for the help so far. could you point me in the right direction as to where i could get a tune-o-matic bridge and a "stop" tailpiece. and also, now that i think of it, will i have to change the pickups aswell, they're a bit rusty. thanks again for the help so far :)

pickups should be fine, do you have an amp to check? And as for finding the parks you need, ebay is probably your best bet. You can pick up brand names, or if you're on a budget you can pick up cheaper variants. Just make sure to check the dimensions against your guitars fittings.

http://www.stewmac.com and http://www.guitarpartsresource.com are both good sites for parts. They ship to Ireland (takes about a week or less) and the shipping price is reasonable.

Stew Mac have great customer service. They really know their stuff. Even if you don't buy from them sign up for their newsletter. It's about one a week or so and shows a different repair or modification and how to do it. Very informative. :)

Keep the original pickups if you can, if this is a pre-1991 Hondo there is a good possibility they are unbranded di Marzio pickups and very good quality. :D

ya, i think the guitar is around 20 years old, maybe a bit more. i'll keep the pickups so. the only thing is, on one of them, one of the springs is all bent and messed up, and the pickup doesen't stay firmly in place. can i get the springs by themselves?

anyway, i think i'll get one of these tailpieces:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_non-trem_tailpieces/Gotoh_Stop_Tailpieces.html

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_non-trem_tailpieces/Gotoh_Aluminum_Stop_Tailpiece.html

and this Tune-o-matic bridge:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_Tune-o-matic_bridges/Gotoh_Tune-o-matic_Bridge_with_Studs_Bushings.html

i'm still not sure about the bridge though. the only thing i'm worried about now is the size of the screws, and if they'd fit on the guitar...

and i'll post back pictures aswell when it's finished :)

EDIT: which of these strings do you think i should i get (for a beginner if it makes a difference):

The tailpiece and bridge look fine, but check the dimensions if you don't want to have to drill new holes.
Post spacing on that bridge is 2-29/32" (73.82mm), you'll have to measure the spacing on your guitar.

Here's your springs.

Get your strings from here

Something like this would be fine

Looks like a fun and simple project, you'll have a decent guitar when it's done!

YAY, i just tested out the pickups on an amp, and they work. :D
ok so, here's what im ordering:

Bridge:
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_Tune-o-matic_bridges/Gotoh_Tune-o-matic_Bridge_with_Studs_Bushings.html

Tailpiece:
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_non-trem_tailpieces/Gotoh_Stop_Tailpieces.html

Strings:
http://www.strings.ie/cart.php?target=product&product_id=275&category_id=82

ok so, can i just ask one more question? On that tailpiece, i think there's different types,
e.g. Chrome, 5/16-24 and Chrome, M8 x 1.25

whats the difference?
Thanks :)

I'm sure its cheaper to buy those parts online but if you bought them in a shop at least you could check on the spot that they fit properly.
There may possibly be some other issue with the guitar that prompted the original owner to take off the bridge and tailpiece in the first place. In other words: if the guitar was playing well, why would anyone take off those vital parts?

You would think so, yes?

But very rarely do guitar shops in Ireland have parts. Most likely if you ask you'll get a "Wha?" answer back. :pac:

i got the guitar off my uncle, and surely he would have told me if there was anything else wrong with it. maybe the parts were broken or he could have used them to repair another guitar. anyway, that doesen't really matter, i checked the guitar on an amp, and it seems fine.

so does anyone know the difference between the two types of tailpieces,
e.g. Chrome, 5/16-24 and
Chrome, M8 x 1.25,

One is metric, one is imperial measurement. :)
You really need to measure the posts on your guitar.

i measured them already, i even checked the "specs" tab at the bottom of the page. all the measurements look fine. so it wouldn't really matter which one i get?

EDIT: wait, does it mean screw sizes?

Yes, that would mean screws and threads.

sounds and plays great so far... i love it :D:D:D ...

Edit: though i just noticed that when i play with the amp plugged out, it makes a rattling sound... does it need to be set up or anything?

It's probably the action on it. Or a raised fret or two. I take it that it's string buzz you're referring to and not some rattle from another part of the guitar.

yeah, its definitely the strings

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

Is it on any particular fret? Or is it just a buzz you get when you play open strings? I would raise the action a tad anyway and see if that helps.

ok so, i raised the action a bit. but its still making the same sound. it doesent happen when i play open strings. when i play a chord, or even when i just play one string, the sound comes out perfect, but the moment i bring my fingers off the strings, they start buzzing.
