    Hey folks,

    I'm going away to NY on monday just on a holiday for a week, but ill have a few spare dollars and wonder could i get a good deal on a phone there would anyone know? not iphone, but im wondering do they have like ready to go where i could get a phone for say 60 dollars and perhaps get it unlocked and bring it home or would this just be mayhem?

    Ive tryed tmobile but i think there just bill or sumthing.

    anyone know the main american mobile networks

    Phones in the US are behind those in the EU from my experience last time.

    When I spent a few weeks in NY 3 years ago I got a T-mobile pay as you go sim card and put it in my Irish phone. Most networks don't use GSM, but T-Mobile did at the time. Sim cost me roughly $50 I think and I got some number of free minutes with that. The one thing I didn't realise for a while is that you have to pay to receive calls as well as make them.

    There are bargains to be had if you can find European 3G models as they can't use their 3G facility in the US because the Americans use a different frequency. Might be worth throwing a few model names with European product codes into Froogle to narrow your search.
