Just got an email from movies.ie about a free screening of wanted on the 19th of this month. Looking at the trailers it seems to be a decent brain dead action film which will hopefully benefit from Timur Bekmambetov's visual eye.

Early word is pretty average so seeing it for free is probably the way to go.

Entered, I think the film looks sh*te to be honest but I'll go if it's free :)

Ah, I'm willing to give it a chance. Didn't think much of Nightwatch or Daywatch but the OTT action scenes were quite good and, given that this film seems to consist almost completely of such scenes, I think it'll be a bit of fun.

Btw, have applied for tickets for a few of these screenings and never got any word back. Are you supposed to get an e-mail reply whether you win or not?
Would have like to see Hulk last night :)

Yeah, I'm of the opinion it'll be a mindless action flick that's completely over the top with terrible acting. So I'm kind of looking forward to it now.

Anyone else get tickets for this (got an email pretty quickly this time!)? Proabably a little easier to get tickets for this one as can't imagine it being too popular....

    Didn't win... again!

Movies.ie musn't like me any more :(. Better win for the Dark Knight! Although, I'd like to know first if they'll be showing it in screen 17 (if it's in Cineworld) or screen 1 (if it's in The Savoy). If not, I think I'll wait until it's on general release.

OK just found out I have a spare ticket to this. Will be leaving soon (lousy Bray commute) so if anyone wants a free ticket let me know within the next half an hour and you can have it!

EDIT: Have to go now unfortunately. If anyone from here is around and wants a free ticket, look for the guy in the bright green T-Shirt around the Savoy at 7.10ish.

Just back from the screening of Wanted in the Savoy and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Great action, a pretty simple plot and some deft humour all suffused with that strange energy that Bekmambetov seems to carry with him. Sure it has its faults and it will have many detractors for its lack of 'realism' but really, if realism is what you WANTED - youre looking in the wrong place.
So a fun, unpretentious film that deserves to have a big audience.
You can all wait breathlessly for my hyperbole drenched review over the next few days.
    Cheers
    :)

Yeah a fun, silly, profane actioner in the vain of Shoot Em Up, Crank and Night Watch. Not world changing, and a plenty of flaws, but some of the funniest, most OTT action in some time.

Definitely not a film to be taken seriously!

Must say though I really enjoyed it. Complete nonsense and OTT violence, but very entertaining all the same. Was expecting it to be a lot darker, but ended up being very humourous. Thought McAvoy was great too.

I'd say most people will either love it or hate it, but once you don't take it too seriously, you should enjoy it (someone I went with was expecting The Matrix and absolutely hated it!).

There are certain thematic similarities between Wanted and The Matrix and maybe the action (in the trailers at least) seemed similar but I think it manages to carve a relatively unique niche for itself. In some ways its actually a more well rounded film than The Matrix in that it manages to balance humour, action and some pretty nasty bloodletting in a pretty satisfying way. If we were being honest, The Matrix just relied on the action but it was more than enough to support the ocassional bit of cod-philosophical waffling (the same cannot be said for the sequels).
Wanted works because its obviously not taking itself seriously, whereas in The Matrix I always half expected the Wachowski's were somewhere in the wings, laughing thier heads off at some private joke (or just high on dollar signs).

Want a pile of silliness. I reckon we could all identify with yer man for the first quarter of the film but then the ultra silliness began!

It was a blatant Matrix rip off but had some good action set pieces. But a big pile of poo. The "twist" (and i use that term loosely) was obvious from early on.

It was nice to see no hold up on BnG (Blood n guts! ;))
