Digital Media Engineering or B.Sc. Multimedia?

I'm making some changes to my CAO and I am stuck between Digital Media Engineering and Multimedia.

From what I understand, the B.Sc Multimedia course has a lot of written assignments such as essays and stuff in the first year, and it isn't really Multimedia orientated, more 'Media' orientated. Is this true? And after the first year it gets more physical and gets into editing and processing video, audio and graphics design?

I am more interested in the latter and am willing to put up with the essay writing for the first year (I don't mind it that much, I'm pretty good at it).

Also, the Digital Media Engineering course looks like it deals more with the signal processing of sound and video, such as people would at TV stations, radio stations and mobile phone carriers. It doesn't really touch on the editing of audio and video or anything to do with graphics and 3d design?

Thanks for any info you can give me, guys.

    -Colm

If you like electronics, maths, circuits, software, and networks configuration as well as the lovely mathsy sides of signals and digital signal processing, go for Digital Media Engineering. Don't be fooled by the name. I knew a lot of people who thought DME was a completely different course to what they signed up for. Just make sure you know that you're signing up for an engineering course... not a course where you get to play with audio and video all week.

Multimedia is more about photoshop and design such as websites as well as video and audio editing (probably more what you're into). From what I've heard, you do lots of assignments in Multimedia, but it's less exams... which is also good, you get to pick more specific subjects in 2nd and 3rd year as well, and it's only 3 years compared to the 4 year engineering course.

If you're interested in video/audio/photography Communications also covers some of those things but THAT definitely has more essay type subjects which will probably put you off... but it's a lot more general if you're not sure

hope it helps a bit - just have a read up on the subjects and you'll have a better idea about what the courses are about.

Multimedia sounds perfect for me then. Thanks so much Ornat. :D

I was one of those people who thought DME was a totally different course. :P

Multimedia is the course you are looking for without a doubt. Communications would be another good alternative option.

Well i've moved Multimedia to #1 on my CAO now. I've been looking at the links Ornat posted and it looks perfect for me.
I might put Communications at #2 and DME as #3, unless there is another couse which is similar to Multimedia?
