Proofreading/copy-editing

    Hello,
I would like to train in proofreading and copy-writing, and would be interested to hear from anyone who does this kind of work about how they trained to do it, and how they found work. I'm a bit reluctant to spend hundreds of pounds of courses in the U.K., which seems to be the only formal training available. Is a formal qualification necessary to get proofreading work or is it mainly based on previous experience? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Clé might be able to help: http://www.publishingireland.com/training.shtml, according to this website there's a course coming up in Dublin towards the end of the month. If you're not in Dublin, the National College of Communications did a distance learning course - which I did around 2005-2006 and found it very thorough.

This organisation represent freelance editors and proofreaders: http://www.afepi.ie - but you will have to get training in a recognised area to join as an associate member first. The NCC course allows you to join as an associate member.

I don't work as a freelancer myself but the above are good places to start.

    Best of luck!
