    Hi folks,

I just managed to book a guitar setup with Derek Nelson for this week. The guitar is a '62 RI Strat and it has quite a few problems that I want completely fixed, and even some small parts that I might like replaced all together.

The main problem would be the fret buzz, and I'm pretty sure the frets will need dressing to solve this issue. Or at least I hope that's the cause.

Then I have this odd slight bow in the neck (even though the relief is up to spec) that cannot be fixed as the truss rod won't tighten. Guess that's a major one aswell.

And I also want one of the metal rings on a tuning peg replaced as it's not properly fixed down.

And then of course just a basic setup.

So to those of you who have had their guitars worked on by Derek, will this be expensive do you think?

It depends entirely on whats wrong with your guitar.

As for the "metal ring" on the tuning peg, sounds like the bushing just needs to be pushed into the headstock and maybe shimmed or glued so it doesn't move. Don't quote me on that though.

When you bring it in he will give you an estimate. You will then have some time before the work is done to get the cash together.

    Okay thanks guys.

And punchdrunk have you been to him before? You say it could be 200? I sure hop not.. but then again if he manages to completely 100% fix everything I'll gladly part with that amount. That's a lot though!

Alright thanks for letting me know then.

My strat has been in this state since I got it over 2 yrs ago so I just want the damn thing to be normal at this stage. As long as it comes back fixed it'll be worth it.

I think you can count on it coming back fixed Hendrix89. I've used Derek a few times, and he's a miracle worker.

Yeah I've heard great things about his work which is the main reason I chose him for this job. I'm confident it'll be in good hands. It's just that, as I said, my guitar has been in a bad playing state for so long it's hard to picture it working normally!

When I brought my guitar to him a while back, I had the same problem(My frets we're really bad though) and he quoted me upwards of €200.

a setup and bone nut install ? hmm, i know that you can't really get fixed prices per se. But i think i was quoted 50 for a setup from Musician Inc. a bone nut was about 50 and install is about 40.

    Upwards of €200 ? upwards ?

I had a nick taking out of the 15th fret of an Epi Les Paul Custom. I Eugene McLoughlin and he polished from the 12th fret up and that sorted it. 100 bob little over a year ago.

Every instrument or problem isn't the same, neither is the severity. I had some work done on a bass last year and it cost a good bit. Fair 'nuff though, some of the frets were loose and it needed a fret level & dress, amongst other issues.

But hey, thank your lucky stars you don't play Double Bass. Even a set of strings cost between €100 and several hundred Euro. I believe setups go into the hundreds also (just a basic setup).
