Getting local channels without cable connection?

Ok, you'll have to bear with me here, I know nothing about the inner workings of a telly!

We want to get a little TV/DVD combo to put in the den so kids can watch dvds whils we watch sky in peace.

There's no cable connection in there and I wondered if we'd be able to pick up RTE 1 & 2 and TV 3 on the telly - do they have some sort of internal aerial? It's be handy when himself is glued to sports on sky, at least I could watch something when kids in bed.

Cant afford sky multiroom, so that's out, I'm afraid!

Any advice /suggestions? Do you just not get any stations without a cable connection or aerial on roof - neither of which is a goer financially?

    Thanks a mil.

tv probably doesnt have a builtin aerial, not sure I've ever seen one with this. But you should be able to pick up a cheap internal aerial/rabbits ears to able to get rte1/2/tv3.
Of course a coat hanger connected into the aerial socket could also have the desired effect :D

Thanks, syboit. Would the likes of DID have the rabbit ears?? Or would they look at me in disdain??
I remember the days of coathangers and what a pain they were :)
Thinking of buying a tv/dvd combi secondhand - good idea or not?? Dont want to spend small fortune for short term item!
    Cheers

yup, reckon DID or maplins would have indoor aerials, not sure if they still call them rabbits ears though :)

As for the purchase of a 2nd hand item, not sure really, suppose its down to personal preference and cost of unit and comparing that to what full price in the likes of did/powercity would be - http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-05

Power City and Dixons should have set-top aerials of various shapes and sizes from about €15 to €40 (the latter end of the scale being for a plug-in amplified aerial, the latter being sometimes necessary in my experience for TV3 and TG4 reception).

Most portable TVs will come with some sort of set-top aerial, anyway.

That's great at least I know where I am now and what to ask for (will omit all mention of ears) :)
Link was very useful! can do price comparisons now
    Cheers guys

If it has a digital tuner, and you're in range of the DTT trial, you could try some €2 rabbit ears from the €2 shop - works fine for me! Not sure how long that would last though, if the trial end in July.

    Steve.
