i cant seem to decipher a straight answer on this:

    one qoute: from motornet.ie

"This tax is known as Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) and is payable on the first registration of a car in the State, which has to be done before it can be licensed for road tax purposes, thereby making the car legal to drive"

says vrt is payable on the first registration of a car in the state

does that mean if i buy a used car [already irish registered] that i dont need to pay vrt?
    just the normal road tax
and maybe a fee to re-register it in my name

or do i still have to pay vrt.

the car i'm thinking of is an audi a4 €2000-€3000
and would rather not pay an extra €500-€750 ! obviously

    thanks jim

No you don't need to pay vrt on a car once it is registered here in Ireland already. Also there is no fee for changing ownership of a car.

If you were buying a secondhand car from the UK you would need to pay VRT to register the car here in Ireland if you get my meaning?

Is this still the case (3 years down the line from these posts)?
