no mention about whether it's intel only. The big thing for me from the release are the following phrases "taps into the vast computing power of graphic processing units (GPUs)", and "Snow Leopard further extends support for modern hardware with Open Computing Language (OpenCL), which lets any application tap into the vast gigaflops of GPU computing power previously available only to graphics applications."

this is going to be a little bit special i think.

Yeah seems like there is going to be a lot more emphasis on performance doesn't there, should be interesting.

what a ridiculous name for an OS

Okay I can't let that go, while I agree that examples are the best way to make a point on something, I just can't agree with the use of Bugatti Veyron as a bad name example. How about the 'Ford Probe' or 'Renault LeCar'.

Bugatti == Cool name with loads of history behind it
Veyron == Bugatti driver who won Le Mans 24 hours race.

Bugatti Veyron == Cool name for car, and a beast of a car at that.

in your opinion of course as is the opinion of someone that snow leopard is a terrible name for an OS.

in the end the name doesn't matter as long as it preforms.

Aye, well Snow Leopard is probably a name without substance, ie. a historical reason it's called that.

Did it have any details at all? This is something I'd be genuinely excited about (to make up for my joy killing in other threads :p)

Yeah I was thinking that too... Or Intel Minis. Seems like a strange choice, unless of course they want to push people onto their more powerful machines.

They can call it Silver Donkey as far I'm concerned. I'm very pleased that it will focus on performance and stability. While Leopard had some nice features, many of them just added to the bloat.

Apple is, I would say, happy that Leopard safely spanks Vista, and will consolidate that for the next 9 months. They know that Microsoft is locked into releasing Winows 7 in 3-4 years, and have already locked down the core features for it. That gives them 2 major OS releases in which to extend their percieved lead against their main competitor/benchmark. They work in a short timeframe for OS releases that focuses on a small set of certain deliverables so I would say that they are planning on making 10.7 a 'big bang' for user level stuff but they still need to release stuff in the meantime.

Of course, maybe they just ran out of ideas for the time being...

That's what I first though as well but it seems not. I think it relays the idea that it will be building on Leopard also as opposed to being something drastically different.

I think we're going to see a lot of things that were rumoured for Leopard but ended up being cut. Resolution Independence is an obvious one, perhaps an updated GUI as well as extended multi-touch support.

OSX is pretty much feature-complete at the moment, if you ask me. There is a danger of bloating it by adding features just for the sake of it. Hopefully it wont go down that road!

Agreed. Hopefully they'll fix up the UI as well and make it truly unified. This was supposed to be a feature of Leopard but they didn't have time to finish it.

so its like a service pack for windows? but you pay for it, i think its a silly name as well.

would you really be willing to pay 100+ euros for stability and security? or wait for the next full os?

I've always been pretty oblivious to the cat names...

This will be 10.6 for me.

Using half the RAM and drive space, as well as running faster and being more stable could be worth paying for users who want it. Remember that between now and then Leopard will receive at least another 7 updates with features and fixes, and it's already more stable than Tiger was at 10.4.3.

I agree with NekkidBibleMan; the OS doesn't need too many additional features. Add too much and it might end up like another OS out there, where stuff got added for the sake of it and the bloat slows it down...

Bear in mind that Apple also released 10.1 as a free update to 10.0 owners, so if it is simply an incremental update, we may see it released free, or for a knock-down price.

However, if it is significantly faster and more stable, and has things like extensive multi-touch, resolution independence and so on, then it goes far beyond your typical "Service Pack", and Apple could justifiably charge a fee.

Interestingly, it will ship with Safari 4 and Quicktime 10. Safari 4 is supposedly markedly quicker than the current version (which is also incredibly quick to begin with!). I wonder, with the introduction of Quicktime 10, will they take the opportunity to spruce up FrontRow a little too?

Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard — scheduled to ship in about a year — builds on Leopard’s enormous innovations by delivering a new generation of core software technologies that will streamline Mac OS X, enhance its performance, and set new standards for quality.

Releasing in 1 year - do they always announce them this early?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

It was announced at a developers' conference, as they'll obviously need a fair amount of heads-up of an impending OS release, as well as being needed for feedback etc by Apple.

Leopard was announced long before it was released, and Microsoft have already showed off some of Windows 7...

    http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/11/snow-leopard-to-drop-powerpc-support/
PowerPC users, your days could be numbered. According to an alleged screenshot of Snow Leopard's system requirements, only Intel CPUs will get to take a ride on the 10.6 train as of now. The grab comes from an early version of the OS seeded to developers at WWDC this week, though given that Jobsy said we're a year out from an actual release, these things could change. Still, it's not looking promising for those of you who've stood by your older models -- but Apple shutting out legacy users doesn't come as a real shock, does it?
